It kills me not to know this but I've all but just forgotten
What the color of her eyes were and her scars or how she got them
As the telling signs of age rain down a single tear is dropping
Through the valleys of an aging face that this world has forgotten
There is no reconciliation that will put me in my place
And there is no time like the present to drink these draining seconds
But seldom do these words ring true when I'm constantly failing you
Like walls that we just can't break through until we disappear
So tell me now
If this ain't love then how do we get out?
'Cause I don't know
That's when she said I don't hate you boy
I just want to save you while there's still something left to save
That's when I told her I love you girl
But I'm not the answer for the questions that you still have
But the day pressed on like crushing weights
For no man does it ever wait
Like memories of dying days
That deafen us like hurricanes
Bathed in flames we held the brand
Uncurled the fingers in your hand
Pressed into the flesh like sand
Now do you understand?
So tell me now
If this ain't love then how do we get out?
'Cause I don't know
That's when she said I don't hate you boy
I just want to save you while there's still something left to save
That's when I told her I love you girl
But I'm not the answer for the questions that you still have
1000 miles away
There's nothing left to say
But so much left that I don't know
We never had a choice
This world is too much noise
It takes me under
It takes me under once again
I don't hate you
I don't hate you
So tell me now
If this ain't love then how do we get out?
'Cause I don't know
That's when she said I don't hate you boy
I just want to save you while there's still something left to save
That's when I told her I love you girl
But I'm not the answer for the questions that you still have
to me it means, the guy has done things in the past that hurt his girl and made them argue, and he feels totally bad about it but he can't get over it. since he can't get over it, he's starting to distance himself from her because he doesn't want to hurt her. no matter what they keep arguing so he asks her,"if this aint love then how do we get out". so she tells him," i dont hate you"and that she loves him to much to give up on him, and she wants to help him get through his problems. he tells her he loves her but feels that he's not the right man for her.
i think this song means that some one doesnt hate you just cause they do stuff that you dont think is right that they just wana save you b4 its too late
The meaning of this song to me, was pretty clear in the beginning to me. The song opens up with lines like "it kills me not to know this but i've all but just forgotten what the color of her eyes were, or her scars or how she got them." To me, that says that there was someone he obviously cared for a lot and was really close with, that decided to step out of his life, and he's not happy about it. And the next verse "as the telling signs of age rain down a single tear is dropping." That also said, he's waited for this person, but time has gone by and still he finds that she doesn't care for him the same way. Skipping down to the pre-chorus. He says "so tell me now, if this ain't love then how do we get out, because i don't know." He's come to terms that theres no way she's in love with him or feels the same way he does, and he doesn't know how to respond to it, or how to act. Next part was a little confusing to me too. His self destructive behavior because this girl doesn't love him brings the girl to tell him "I don't hate you boy, i want to save you while theres still something left to save." At this point he realizes he doesn't want her to sacrifice her own happiness for him, and he's not quite sure whether shes saying this because she actually loves him, or because she doesn't want to see him get hurt. Hense, "I love you girl, but i'm not the answer for the questions that you still have" The next verse is obviously the continuing pain hes feeling for the loss of this person in his life. "The days pressed on like crushing weights" And the next verse "And memories of dying days, that deafen us like hurricanes" He remembers the days when they were happy together, and then compares them to how things are now, and it angers him. The next few lines are basically metaphors for sadness and anger, and the "Do you understand?" was him explaining all those emotions to whomever this song is addressed to. The chorus repeats, that's been explained. The next part, "1000 miles away, theres nothing left to say" He's finally come to terms with the fact that it's never going to be the same between them, and leaves. The next verse "So much left i don't know, we never had a choice" That comes from him thinking about what it would have been like if she still did love him, they never had a choice to be together again. (the last part may be a bit of a stretch, but that's what i believe it means). Then in the next verse "this world is too much noise" He realizes that the world is going to throw things at him that are unfair, and he has to accept it. The next part is what really made me think of this meaning, the fact that "I don't hate you" is running through his head. It is, because that was never the reaction he wanted from her, when she confronted him about his destructive behavior, he wanted her to tell him that she still loves him, but all she said was "i don't hate you." which overall, was what bothered him most. The next part, repeates the prechorus, "if this ain't love than how do we get out? because i don't know." Again, he asks this question because she obviously had an easier time getting out of the relationship than he did, so he just wants to know how to get away from it, and let it go. After the chorus, it echoes twice more "I don't hate you" And in the end it was that he hated most.
Now, that's what it means to me, the posters above had different interpretations of the song but when i heard it, maybe it's from life experiences, but i instantly thought that which is odd. That's why i posted it.
this song, to me, is about a relationship and one night the man gets drunk and beats on his girl. But shes telling him that she still loves him and dosnt hate him and wants to save him from what his turning into. And he still loves her too but he dosnt think he can change. It's hard for them to break thru that wall that now seperates them.
