Am I loud and clear or am I breaking up?
Am I still your charm or am I just bad luck?
Are we getting closer or are we just getting more lost?
I'll show you mine if you show me yours first
Let's compare scars I'll tell you whose is worse
Let's unwrite these pages and replace them with our own words
[Chorus]
We live on front porches and swing life away
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor I'll slave 'til the end
I won't cross these streets until you hold my hand [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/r/rise_against/swing_life_away.html ]
I've been here so long I think that it's time to move
The winter's so cold summer's over too soon
Let's pack our bags and settle down where palm trees grow
I've got some friends some that I hardly know
But we've had some times I wouldn't trade for the world
We chase these days down with talks of the places that we will go
[Chorus]
We live on front porches and swing life away
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor I'll slave 'til the end
I won't cross these streets until you hold my hand
Until you hold my hand
I'll show you mine if you show me yours first
Let's compare scars I'll tell you whose is worse
Let's unwrite these pages and replace them with our own words
We live on front porches and swing life away
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor I'll slave till the end
I wont cross these streets until you hold my hand
Swing life away
Swing life away
Swing life away
Swing life away...

I read somewhere that tim mcilrath stated it was was about an old friend of his but to me it sounds like he is explaining to a gf or somebody that they dont need everything to be happy. If thats the case i agree that people need to seek comfort in others and not things and such. Great song and idk why but this one really gets me when i listen to it and its just a great song and im kinda wishing they had an acoustic track on endgame like they did on apeal to reason but oh well.

Give "our" relationship a chance. Dont be afraid to open your heart up to "him"

I think swing life away is a song about a couple going through hard times, though it may be tough we will always get through this together. He loves her and wont let her go.
One of my guy friends played this on his guitar and sung it to me. He was almost as good as rise against. And now hes moving back to florida. And everytime i here this song i think of all the crazy things we did together. I almost gave up my innocence to him, hes the only person ive ever showed my scars too
I think it means their relationship is sorta rocky, hence why he asks if he is a charm or just bad luck. He loves her, and just wants everything to be nice, and to forget the past and start new (unwrite these pages and replace them with our own words). They have financial troubles (minimum wage) but they still love each other and he wont continue down his life road without her (i wont cross these streets until you hold my hand). The line "we live on front porches and swing life away" brings up an image of them sitting together on a swing on their front porch, living their lives together.
He just trying to show that the good times outway the bad. He wants to make amends and start over new. Take her away from the cold of home and bring her to the warmth of his arms. Very good song!
I think its about two people finding meaning inside eachother. Ill show you mine if you show me urs first is a sexual comparison as well as a comparison of scars and things they had each gone threw in the passed. They both saved eachother, they need eachother, as well as want eachother forever. And when theyre together time goes really fast, hence the name swing life away.
