Warm yourself by the fire, son,
And the morning will come soon.
I'll tell you stories of a better time,
In a place that we once knew.
Before we packed our bags
And left all this behind us in the dust,
We had a place that we could call home,
And a life no one could touch.
Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You won't let me down, down, down!
Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You won't let me down, down, down!
Down!
We are the angry and the desperate,
The hungry, and the cold,
We are the ones that kept quiet,
And always did what we were told.
But we've been sweating while you slept so calm,
In the safety of your home.
We've been pulling out the nails that hold up
Everything you've known. [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/r/rise_against/prayer_of_the_refugee.html ]
Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You won't let me down, down, down!
Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You won't let me down, down, down!
So open your eyes child,
Let's be on our way.
Broken windows and ashes
Are guiding the way.
Keep quiet no longer,
We'll sing through the day,
Of the lives that we've lost,
And the lives we've reclaimed.
Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You won't let me down, down, down!
Don't hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don't need your help now,
You won't let me down, down, down!
Don't hold me up...
(I don't need your help, I'll stand my ground)
Don't hold me up...
(I don't need your help)
No! No! No!
Don't hold me up!
(I don't need your help, I'll stand my ground)
Don't hold me up!
(I don't need your help, I'll stand my ground)
Don't let me down, down, down, down, down!
Well, it's told in a refugee's perspective. They had to flee from their home, and now their starving and cold in the streets. We shouldn't take things for granted, and be thankful for what we have. Although others may push us around, we dont have it as extremely bad. We have shelter, food, etc. And they have next to nothing. So while others push us around, we can simple stand up to them. But the refugees have given up pretty much everything, and are pretty much dying in the streets.

I always hate when people try to guess what these songs are about instead of taking the band's word for it.
This song is about how america has been living high on the hog and getting lazy. What once was a great nation has turned into a bunch of welfare cases who want to take money from the government in the name of 'fairness'.
Meanwhile, china and like nations are booming economically and will one day surpass us as the greatest nation in the world.

This is the story of all the people in the world. We all have been lead away, and we all just need to find our way back to that place.

Stop telling me you've got it so bad. Gosh, you say you're the 99%? Living in america, you are the 1%, the lucky ones. Don't even pretend like you're in poverty when i live on $92 a year (absolute poverty line in china).
That's what this song is about.
To me it means a group of people who have always been pushed around and have followed orders just so they can live finally had enough and just left. They left and now they dont care about what they just left even though they could be dying or strving
From my previous post, i realized it said you won't let me down... Although that doesn't really make sense because he was scolding this "you" one line before, so...
I thought since it was a prayer of the refugee, the bursting part about "don't hold me up now, i don't need your help now" was a prayer to god, telling god that you made me a refugee, you brought this onto me, don't continue to "help" me, you will let me down, down, down, down...
Dis saawng coulnt get any beetter. Daz cuz its gotta serene hook, which abruptly merges into some sorta punk rock genre, that totally bumps it up to a whole nutha level; if u cant beat em, join em
Just watching the vid explains the message behind this song. He is talking about how lots of items branded "made in the us" is actually made in a third-world country by a poor class of people. The vid is shows a lot of emotion and anger towards the us gov't and how they know what's up but pretend to be blindfolded from the truth.
About how we wouldn't be able to live without the poorer third world countries and the people in them .. In other words .. Fair trade .. Thats my opinion .. Am i right? Lol
