None of his material was ever intended to be released, but fans recorded the troupe's songs and traded them on the net, creating a star in a market that never existed. Hard-rock mining was a mainstay in developing Canada. The towns were as hard as the work they did, and life wasn't any easier. This is life in any town that might be mining gold or coal or nickel or potash or tar or.

Ray Stevens is what happens when you take a humourist, smash it into a poet and sprinkle it with musical instruments. From the days of Ahab The Arab and Guitarzan until the new millenium Ray has pulled our legs and tickled our funny-bones. In the 70's Barry Manilow was supreme in the pop world, and each song seemed more a heart-rending tale than the last. Since Barry had so much experience with disaster and despair, Ray would like a little help, please.

This was Marty Balin's first real huge success and really displayed his vocals while allowing Grace Slick to step into the background a bit. Marty assumed the role of lead singer for the band and led them through a series of hits in the late 70's and 80's. This rather descriptive(graphic?) love song describes the elation that hormones produce early in a relationship. Everything else disappears, you become invincible, and magic is very real.

The song was a hit for Jefferson Airplane, long before they modernized to "Jefferson Starship" then "Starship". The striking sound of Grace Slick seems like she is singing through clenched teeth, and most likely was. The song is about times of crisis, and how it would be nice to have some support nearby. Just a friend isn't enough. Jim Carey's version is a conglomeration of the Altamont tragedy and several other concert events from the time. The story about the song history is just plain wrong.

The original belongs to The Mamas And Papas. The group had moved from L. A. To New York in hopes of bettering their careers, but fell on hard times, financially and personally. This song is about John's feelings on one of those many times they discussed going "home", and knew they couldn't. At least, not right away. A short six months later, California Dreaming became one of the most successful of the pop-folk songs of the 60's.

Edie was one of the last true one-hit-wonders. Since then, it has become more of a one-album-wonder, since recording companies won't push just a single song. The song is a psycho-spiritual journey through confused thoughts. The only thing she is certain of is that she isn't certain of much, but she won't pretend to be a certain "way". If she was to shake your hand, would she be meeting you, or a "best behaviour" you? Are you what you are, or what?

I had the pleasure of meeting the guys a couple times on tours through Northern Ontario. Singing in Innu Aionun (a combination Native/French dialect) their songs are about the things you think of when you have time alone, and they carry a positive message of hope and growth sadly lacking in most artists. This song is a reflection on how we should carry respect for all things, and all people. Particularly for the thing inside you. Your spirit.
