Do you spend your days counting the hours you're awake?
And when night covers the sky you find yourself doing the same
There's a burden you've been bearing in spite of all your prayers
There's a light turned off inside your heart
Can you remember what it's like to care?

Knees are weak, hands are shaking, I can't breathe

So give me the drug, keep me alive
Give me what's left of my life
Don't let me go, whoa
Pull this plug, let me breathe
On my own, I'm finally free
Don't let me go, whoa

The trail of crumbs you left somehow got lost along the way
If you never meant to leave then you only had to stay
But the memories that haunt us are cherished just the same
As the ones that bring us closer to the sky, no matter how gray
And yet I fall, through these clouds, reaching, screaming

Give me the drug, keep me alive
Give me what's left of my life
Don't let me go, whoa
Pull this plug, let me breathe
On my own, I'm finally free
Don't let me go, whoa

This grip loosens but it never breaks (never breaks!)
We carry nothing but a name you will forsake
Your words are always there to break my fall (break my fall!)
In them I find the comfort to see through it all

Guide me through unchartered waters
Before we lose our way again
Will you be my compass until forever?
Until forever ends?!

Knees are weak, hands are shaking, I can't breathe

So give me the drug, keep me alive
Give me that's left of my life
Don't let me go, whoa
Pull this plug, let me breathe
On my own, I'm finally free
Don't let me go, whoa

Don't let me go, whoa
Don't let me go, whoa

Taken at face value, the lyrics do seem to express the turmoil that addicts face, but if you dig a little deeper they take on a whole new meaning. It seems to me that it is a commentary on our dependence on technology. Because of "social" networking, we have become "disconnected" from each other, on a personal level. Today most people can't have a face to face conversation, without a screen or keyboard in between them. We have become "tech junkies. " just as heroin or any other narcotic, technology is an addictive drug, and once hooked, it is hell trying to break free. Hence the line, "pull this plug, let me breathe... " we need to "unplug" ourselves, and learn to communicate with each other again, before we loose all semblance of humanity.

To me the song is clearly about heroin addiction. Myself being a former addict can relate to this song entirely. The part about counting the hours of the day and "the light turns off inside your heart can you remember what its like to care" is the part leading up to the addiction and is what made you turn to using. "give me the drug keep me alive" is about how you literally need the drug in your system to function once you become dependant on it. You need to use it or you become as physically and mentally sick as the body can possibly get I. E "knees are weak, hands are shaking, i cant breath". Then "the grip loosens but it never breaks" is saying how you can try to quit hundreds of times but always end up relapsing. . "we carry nothing but a name you will forsake" = junky. And the part about "you words are always there to break my fall in them i find the comfort to see through it all" is reffering to the mentality of a junky being dependant on the security and sense of well being the drug gives them to deal with everyday life. But at the same time the relationship a user has with a substance mirrors the unhealthy/dependant relationsships people have with humans as well. So it could be about the concept as a whole. Either way one of my favorite songs.
