My Chemical Romance – Black Parade lyrics
When I was
A young boy,
My father
Took me into the city
To see a marching band
.
He said,
"Son when
You grow up,
Would you be
The savior of the broken,
The beaten and the damned? "

He said
"Will you
Defeat them,
You demons
,
And all the non believers,
The plans that they have made?
Because one day
I'll leave you,
A phantom
To lead you in the summer
,
To join the black parade. "

Sometimes I get the feeling, she's watching over me
And other times I feel like I should go
Went through it all, the rise and fall
The bodies in the streets
And when you're gone we want you all to know

We'll carry on, We'll carry on
And though you're all dead and gone believe me
Your memory will carry on

We'll carry on
And in my heart I can't contain it
The anthem won't explain it

A woman sends you reeling from decimated dreams
Your misery and hate will kill us all
So paint it black and take it back
Let's shout out loud and clear
Defiant to the end we hear the call

To carry on

We'll carry on,
And though you're dead and gone believe me
Your memory will carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're broken and defeated
Your weary widow marches
On and on we carry through the fears
Oh oh oh

Disappointed faces of your peers
Oh oh oh
Take a look at me 'cause I could not care at all
Do or die
You'll never make me
Because the world will never take my heart
Come and try; you'll never break me
We want it all, we want to play this part
I won't explain, or say I'm sorry
I'm unashamed, I'm gonna show my scar
Give a cheer, for all the broken
Listen here, because it's who we are
I'm just a man; I'm not a hero
Just a boy, whose meant to sing this song
I'm just a man; I'm not a hero
I
Don't
Care!

We'll carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're dead and gone believe me
Your memory will carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're broken and defeated
Your weary widow marches on
Do or die
You'll never make me
Because the world will never take my heart
Come and try; you'll never break me
We want it all, we want to play this part
Do or die
You'll never make me
Because the world will never take my heart
Go and try; you'll never break me

We want it all, we want to play this part
We'll carry on

The video for this song is a man that dies, the "black parade" being everyone that has died in a procession that is the afterlife. The other songs on the album suggests the man was a sinner looking for forgiveness (See House of Wolves). I think the "we'll carry on" parts suggest that he had family that will mourn his death. He must have left some kind of legacy, because it says "your memory will carry on."
He says "I'm just a man, I'm not a hero" and it leads me to believe that ordinary people can do great things.

The song symbolizes that "Death comes to you in the form of your fondest memory. It could be anything but in this case, in the form of a parade. When the patient was a young boy, his father took him into the city to see a marching band." according to My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way.

Personally when I hear this song without the context in the video it makes me think about the relationship MCR has had with its audience. A lot of fans see MCR as their savior from their personal demons and troubles and use the band's music as an escape and as a way to connect with the other people who have issues like theirs ( the broken, beaten and the damned). When MCR broke up they left us to join their own black parade of past influential bands but over the years they have given us the tools and power of their words and wisdom to be able to carry on without them. Other parts of this song make me think of this band when they say when we'll carry on because even though MCR has been gone for a couple of years now they still are inspiring and their legacy lives in the hearts of fans. Also MCR were just a bunch of musicians but they are seen as saviors and heroes to many and when they say they are just a man not a hero and are just here to sing this song it makes me believe that any ordinary person can accomplish great things and influence a massive amount of people's lives.

I agree with blackparader94 about this song, but to me, it has a different meaning.
I used to hate life. I had nowhere to go, no one to talk to, no one to understand me. So I hid it behind someone I wasn't. It got so bad I started contemplating dying, seeing it as something more beautiful than life.
Then I heard this song. Something changed. I pictured gerard, mikey, frank, and ray as the black parade, and they were a place for us outcasts and rejects to go.
And I could relate to it, too. "disappointed faces of your peers"- all of my 'friends' were disappointed that I had turned 'emo' and left me. So I turned to the black parade.
Gerard turned out to be the savior of the broken, beaten, and damned- us.
We'll carry on and the world will never take our hearts.
So that was my original take on it, I soon found out the real meaning though.
Even when mcr is dead and gone, how bout we make sure their memory will carry on:) they're going to live forever in the lights they made. That's my plan.

I think personally, this song is about a man that is nearly dead, but he is only in a coma. And all he can remember well he is in this coma is that 'His father took him into the city to see a marching band'. So he figures this must be the most significand moment in his life. And all he wants to do is find out what the words were that his father said to him.
    Thanks for reading.
