They're gonna clean up your looks
With all the lies in the books
To make a citizen out of you
Because they sleep with a gun
And keep an eye on you, son
So they can watch all the things you do

Because the drugs never work
They're gonna give you a smirk
Cause they got methods
Of keeping you clean
They're gonna rip up your heads
Your aspirations to shreds
Another cog in the murder machine

They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They couldn't care less as long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone
But not me

The boys and girls in the clique
The awful names that they stick
You're never gonna fit in much kid
But if you're troubled and hurt
What you got under your shirt
Will make them pay for the things that they did

They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They couldn't care less as long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone
But not me

Whoa yeah!

They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They couldn't care less as long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone
But not me

All together now,
Teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They couldn't care less as long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone

But not me

Teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They couldn't care less as long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone
But not me

this is a combination of all the other meanings that have been posted... its about how adults think we (teenagers/punks) are.. they are constantly trying to fit in with us.. they think we're all violent.. and when they say "sleep with a gun" they think were all in a "gang"

In an interview Gerard said that he wrote this after watching teenagers on the bus or train, can't remember which. They were a lot more... what's the word? ... I guess more trouble making then he was. And. Well. They scared the shit out of him. That's all I know for fact. I think that Gerard also put in a bit of lyrics about adults trying to change us teens who aren't straight A cheerleader/football player I'll-stab-you-in-the-back students. The ones who get catagorized as "emos", even though I say there shouldn't be a lable.

This song, I acutally heard is about the government. If you listen, you can pick up hints. Eg.

They're gonna clean up your looks
With all the lies in the books
To make a citizen out of you
Because they sleep with a gun
And keep an eye on your son
So they can watch all the things you do

The government, want to make us clean, for us all to be equal, no individuality. To make a citizen, is saying, making a model persong, a flag worshipper. Because they sleep with a gun, could be the defence syste saying there is violence verywhere. And watching all the tings we do, is because of hidden cameras.

The songs saying to act out against the 'government' in our lives, which could be parents, teachers, friends. To be an individual an not to follow the herd.

    Well, thats just my opinion.

    Peace :D

in my point of view this song just puts out the way government feels about teenagers. i think it was good for them to put this song out because it shows how people under mind us teenagers and think we cant think for our selfs and when we show them up they try to bring us down and hurt us. no matter what we are your future and no one can change that unless they wipe the whole teenage population of the face of the earth ;) but i like this song it makes me think what i can do.

gerard said in an interview he once saw some teens in a bus (or train? whatever) acting very violent, and the fact one day they'll be the adults responsible for everything scared the living shit out of him. at least i think so. and it's about cliques in high school, mcr hates elitism. it's about how some teenagers are idiots and we shouldn't be like that.
