They're gonna clean up your looks
With all the lies in the books
To make a citizen out of you
Because they sleep with a gun
And keep an eye on you, son
So they can watch all the things you do

Because the drugs never work
They're gonna give you a smirk
Cause they got methods
Of keeping you clean
They're gonna rip up your heads
Your aspirations to shreds
Another cog in the murder machine

They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They couldn't care less as long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone
But not me

The boys and girls in the clique
The awful names that they stick
You're never gonna fit in much kid
But if you're troubled and hurt
What you got under your shirt
Will make them pay for the things that they did

They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They couldn't care less as long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone
But not me

Whoa yeah!

They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They couldn't care less as long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone
But not me

All together now,
Teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They couldn't care less as long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone

But not me

Teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They couldn't care less as long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone
But not me

This song is about stereotypes. Like for instance, i'm only 14, and even being a girl, just wearing eyeliner and darker clothes (because that's my style people), and listening to screamo, makes people who walk by... like adults for instance, look at me like i'm a criminal. they judge, and most adults stereotype kid's as "misbehaved delinquents" because of the way they dress. you could be a brilliant person/ if you dress all emo like, like me because that's the way I like to dress, people look at you weird. it's the way it is. and this song is about taking those types of kid's, like me, and how adults try to turn them into "proper members of society" so that they blend in with daily life, instead of standing out and expressing who they are. when they talk about ripping your aspiration's to shreds, and that it's just another cog in the murder machine, it refers to them murdering and breaking down the person and beliefs you have, so that they can shove their beliefs down your throat. it's all about how many adults are untrusting of teenagers just by their appearance and their habits and likes, and how they want to change the teenage generation of today. i'm only 14 and i understand this... believe me, i hate being called a kid who knows nothing... just because i'm a kid doesn't mean i can't have a good grasp on society's flaws and their ways. but bottom line, the song is about adults changing teens whom they believe do not fit the profile of a proper member of society... eat that peoples! haha jk, jk. BUT I LOVE THIS SONG!!!

As for me the song’s meaning is much deeper than what we perceive. It doesn’t only tackles the issues between the parent-teenager relationship neither how the government wanted to shape-up all the young generations to become a better citizens. It also talks about a sensitive issue on how all these youngsters treat each other, on how to be a part of this herd of carefree people. I think the song calls for the attention of individuals on how to manage their selves to be able to cope in this changing world from young to old. The concern here is not how elders see these young people according to their acts and the way they dress that seems to them as against the norms but also how the youth of today will understand the gap between them (past and future so to speak) that links into another chapter of changes in the society, the response should be mutual I guess. Somehow it’s like “survival of the fittest” that we all need to open our eyes to reality and embrace changes in order to survive but it should be in moderation and with limitation. Adaptation into the changing world is a part of our existence in order for us to mold a concept of what we want to be that is Individualism. All of us can do whatever we wanted to do as long as it doesn’t cause so much trouble and damage to other as well. So keep on doing what we think is right but never let this changes change what is good that is intrinsic in us and what lies within our heart. This song really rocks with sense!---kiapolnaQ

this is a combination of all the other meanings that have been posted... its about how adults think we (teenagers/punks) are.. they are constantly trying to fit in with us.. they think we're all violent.. and when they say "sleep with a gun" they think were all in a "gang"

In an interview Gerard said that he wrote this after watching teenagers on the bus or train, can't remember which. They were a lot more... what's the word? ... I guess more trouble making then he was. And. Well. They scared the shit out of him. That's all I know for fact. I think that Gerard also put in a bit of lyrics about adults trying to change us teens who aren't straight A cheerleader/football player I'll-stab-you-in-the-back students. The ones who get catagorized as "emos", even though I say there shouldn't be a lable.
