I was confused too when I first heard this song
but I kinda agree with "gatumadre".
except that maybe the friendship between the people in this song isnt hypocryte at all. Maybe they we're too necessarily close.
Like in the part "'cause we're all a bunch of animals that never paid attention in school"
I THINK it talks about a bunch of goofball kids that hung out together not taking anything seriously, maybe not even their friendships.
Then years later someone in the group died and the rest realized just how important the actual "friendship" was. That got them through the horrors of growing up, etc.
Therefore, some mourning was shown in saying "And your walking away and I will die in this place"
BUT, lol, because nothing was ever really taken seriously among these people they kinda try to brush it off in saying "You'll never take me alive...do what it takes to survive cause im still here."
yet they know they arent strong enough even to brush this friends departure off like nothing because it ends with "And your walking away and I will drown in the fear." fear not knowing how the whole experience is gonna affect them or fear of actually having to face something alone. or maybe fear that they might actually feel something deep for once.
I dunno, but thats how I see it. hopefully it helps.

and i thought the second part of the chorus was meant to be sarcastic. you know like, it's been 10 fu**in years since i've been seein your face, and i will "drown in the fear"...? haha i don't know, doesn't it kind of sound like it could be sarcastic to you?
also, i think he's saying that no matter what, that crappy "friend" couldn't do anything to ruin his life hence the lyrics: You'll never take me alive, you'll never take me alive.

i don't know. haha but i love this song so much and if that is the real meaning of this song, i can definately relate! =D
