The song's lyrics deal with emotional issues relating to relationship break ups, in particular those of lead singer, Gerard Way and his high-school experiences of adolescent loneliness and angst. The song's overtly senimental lyrics ushered people to label the band as 'emo'. The plot of the song is believed to be about the protagonist of the album confronting a teenager at a high-school who has commenced a school shooting. The protagonist takes the life of the students as part of his deal with Satan. The song supposedly is sung from the student's perspective. The lines 'The photographs your boyfriend took' is about how the girl Gerard had a crush on, she let her current boyfriend take sleazy pictures of her and they managed to get out onto the internet, and Gerard found out and lost all respect for her, which crushed him.
