This song is one of the only songs that can relate well enough to a suicidal person that it could save them if they could understand in time. ( coming from a person who knows)

Quite obviously about a person who doesn't ant to live anymore for whatever reason. They decide to kill themselves and say goodbye to the world. They figure there's no point in living anymore and they shouldn't even bother trying to get help because they don't matter. When tie comes, they just know that they're not worth life and the past doesn't matter anymore, so they "say goodbye". This is one of the most amazing, incredible songs i've ever heard. Metallica is one of the best - if not the best - classic metal-rock bands that you could possibly listen to. The guitar... It's absolutely fitting to the song and gives a perfect atmosphere! :)

This song talks about suicide, and james hetfield got badly burned while playing it... Quite a coincidence... Lots of kids send letters to metallica related to how the song made them feel better. I really love this song and i hear it when i'm depressed.

James wrote this song after a lot of the band's equipment, a gift from his late mother was stolen. He was really depressed.

This song is about when metallica's gear got stolen and their manager kicked them out for drinking his liquor cabinet dry it was really a depressing point in their career. Rest in peace forever cliff burton
