Metallica – Unforgiven 2 lyrics
Lay beside me, tell me what they've done
Speak the words I want to hear
To make my demons run

The door is locked now, but it's open if you're true
If you can understand the me
Then, I can understand the you

Lay beside me, under wicked sky
Through black of day, dark of night
We share this paralyze

The door cracks open
But there's no sun shining through
Black heart scarring darker still

But there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining through
No, there's no sun shining
...

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn to stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you?

Yeah!

What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there?
'Cause I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven, too?

Come lay beside me
This won't hurt, I swear
She loves me not, she loves me still
But she'll never love again

She lay beside me
But she'll be there when I'm gone
Black heart scarring darker still

Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone
Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone
Dead sure she'll be there...

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn to stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you?

Yeah!

What I've felt, what I've known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there?
'Cause I'm the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven, too?

(Solo)

Lay beside me, tell me what I've done
The door is closed
So are your eyes

But now I see the sun
Now I see the sun
Yes, now I see it!

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn to stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you?

Yeah!

What I've felt, what I've known
So sick and tired I stand alone
Could you be there?
'Cause I'm the one who waits...
The one who waits for you, oh!

What I've felt, what I've known
Turn the pages, turn to stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you? (So I dub thee unforgiven)
Oh!

What I've felt, oh, what I've known
I take this key
And I bury it in you
Because you're unforgiven, too.

Never be, never me

'Cause you're unforgiven, too.

Oh, ho, whoa, oh...

This song first off is my absolute favorite. In light of that, I envision it as a love story, something like this. The world is a black, cold, hopeless, unforgiving place ("lay beside me under wicked sky," "no sun shining through," "through the black of day and dark of night") and such as that people endure painful and difficult things, and soon tend to close up to others, ("turn the pages, turn to stone" meaning going through life gradually hardening his heart) and this person has always learned that the world is nothing more than that ("what I've felt, what I've known" "so sick and tired I stand alone".) However he discovered that he is not the only one in this situation. He contemplates his trust/love with this woman ("behind the door, should I open it for you?") because pain is all he has ever known. Then a realization comes to be ("so I dub thee unforgiven" saying that he sees the agony and sorrow he knows exists in him is also within her) both individuals see that the mutual suffering as a basis of great trust and understanding between the two. Because of this he now knows love, hope and happiness ("What I've felt, oh, what I've known," "I take this key, and I bury it in you", because you're unforgiven, too.") in a fading existence. The song in short speaks that out of such ugly things in life like pain can come beautiful things like love.

To understand this song fully you must listen to all 3 parts of it. It is a story about a man who goes through life blaming every one for his faults and issues in life even in his relationships he judges them all to be unforgiving. When he finally realizes that it was him who made most of the problems in his life it is then he can't forgive him self and so he is Unforgiven.

Imo this song is about someone who is obviously in love with his chosen one. I think they were together in the past but he screwed up big time. He was bad person - maybe because of thee unforgiven from the first song (what he's done turns pages to stone, means when someone sees what he's done it turns his soft heart to stone hard) he wants to know if she can love him again (speak the words I want to hear to make my demons (fears) run) he knows he has to confess those bad things to her in order to make their relationship honest (should I open it for you?) but he's afraid that she will abandon him for those things again. So in short he asks for forgiveness.
I know this isn't exact meaning but I get it this way.
