I am not a pattern that we follow
The pill that I'm on is a tough one to swallow
I'm not a criminal not a role model
Not a born leader I'm a tough act to follow
I am not the fortune and the fame
Or the same person telling you to forfeit the game
I came in the ring like a dog on a chain
And found out the underbelly's sicker than it seems
And it seems ugly but it can get worse
Because even a blueprint is a gift and a curse
Because once you get a theory of how the thing works
Everybody wants the next thing to be like the first
And I'm not a robot. I'm not a monkey
I will not dance even if the beat's funky
Opposite of lazy, far from a punk
Stop talking and start trying to catch up motherfucker

And all the people say
Try and catch up motherfucker

Pac said money changes situation
Big said it increase the complication
Kane said don't step I ain't the one
Chuck said an uzi weighs a motherfucking tone
And I'm just a student of the game that they taught me
Rocking every stage and every place that they brought me

I'm awfully underrated but pay me to correct it
And so it ain't mistaken I'm gonna state it for record
I am the opposite of where I got this
A weak opposite, a slack sending them
A heat sending them
A crack closest to a peak
Far from a punk
Ya'll better start trying to catch up motherfucker

And all the people say
Try and catch up motherfucker

But when they come for me
Come for me, I'll be gone
But when they come for me
Come for me, I'll be gone
But when they come for me
Come for me, I'll be gone

And all the people say
Try to catch up motherfucker
And all the people say
Try to catch up motherfucker

It most sounds like a song directed at the fans and critics that are and will hang this album due to how much the way the band has changed. So many people and critics are basing their critique on how it compares to the 1st and 2nd album they released instead of what this album brings to the table. They have gotten caught up in a type of music and time and have fallen behind what they present is. This goes in two meanings since this whole cd seems to continue of the work of the last album but address the aftermath of the time after we reach midnight. It also entails how the previous cds were all based in themes of self struggles and how we should deal with them. Albums directed to affect each person in their own way. This and the last album do the opposite and call to action the need to grow up and see that the world and the future are in peril.

If any one saw the DVD of the making of this video you can also see that at the end they had to make the choice of either selling out and deliver a cd that would conform to what the label wanted and thought should sound like and not what the band wanted and envisioned. Hence the lines where they mention not being a role model and not to follow the pattern.

This is the struggle to move past the patter and expectations and a message to the fans that are still caught in Hybrid Theory and Meteora. Its time to move up and by the time they come up and catch up to present they will have moved up and be gone. They also mention how this is not an exact picture of the future nor a cry to tell anyone to give it all up or its lost but to catch up to reality and do something about it.
