In an interview the Imagine Dragons said that this song was about the bad relationship Dan had with his parents. So keeping that in mind:
This song is about how Dan as a child had a bad relationship with his parents and he did what they didn't want him to. he left one day and said he would never come back. then he did travel the whole world and ended up coming back to apologies.

This song could be about a few things.
1. This guy is seriously depressed and is in love and she doesn't love him back. He thinks that cutting himself (bleeding out) and whipping himself will help.
2. (i think this is more likely) he wants to right some wrongs that happened. He may have had someone dump him and he wants to get back together, but regardless of the reason he is willing to sacrifice his well being for the other. He is also willing to be there for her when she is felling bad. He will "be her scarecrow".

This song is all about working your way up from the bottom. In the beginning he has fallen and then he says things like the path to heaven is through miles of hell. I also think that he is saying that even though he wants to get to the top, he isn't going to change just to please people.
