Imagine Dragons – Bleeding Out lyrics
I'm bleeding out
So if the last thing that I do
Is bring you down
I'll
bleed out for you
So I bare my skin
And I count my sins
And I close my eyes and I take it in
I'm
bleeding out
I'm bleeding out for you
For you

When the day has come
That I've lost my way around
And the seasons stop
And hide beneath the ground
When the sky turns grey
And everything is screaming
I will reach inside
Just to fi nd my heart is beating
Oh you tell me to hold on
Oh you tell me to hold on
But innocence is gone
And what was right is wrong

Cause I'm bleeding
out
So if the last thing that I do
Is bring you down
I'll bleed out for you
So I bare my skin
And I count my sins

And I close my eyes and I take it in
I'm bleeding out
I'm bleeding out for you
For you

When the hour is nigh
And hopelessness is sinking in
And
the wolves all cry
To fill the night with hollering
When your eyes are red
And emptiness is all you know
With the darkness fed
I will be your scarecrow
You tell me to hold on

Oh you tell me to hold on
But innocence is gone
And what was right is wrong

Cause I'm bleeding out
So if the last thing that I do
Is bring you down
I'll bleed out for you
So I bare my skin
And I count my sins

And I close my eyes and I take it in
I'm bleeding out
I'm bleeding out for you
For you

Cause I'm bleeding out
So if the last thing that I do
Is bring you down
I'll bleed out for you
So I bare my skin
And I count my sins
And I close my eyes and I take it in
I'm bleeding out
I'm bleeding out for you
For you

I interpret the song differently. I'm not sure if this is truly the meaning of the song but I'll throw it out there.

He sings bleeding out for you, several times throughout the song. This is to me about self sacrifice for the other, giving everything he has to make the other person's pain go away.

Having lived a very demanding relationship where I have sacrificed myself for the other, I understand the meaning of this song. Giving up everything for the other while going down yourself.

I think it's less likely to be about love. Dan Reynolds grew up with a lot of dark turns in his life, hence Radioactive being about his overcoming of anxiety and depression. This song is possibly telling about the following:.

He is talking about his depression, his sorrow, and his life. And about cutting. "I'll bleed out for you" is not talking about a woman, or a man for that matter. It's him saying to himself "I suck, I'll cut and watch the blood escape for all of you that hate me, because you're right." When he says "So I bear my skin, and I count my sins, and I close my eyes, and I take it in" I think it means "I 'bear my skin' (he's getting his wrist out so he can cut it), I tell myself everything that's wrong with me (counting my sins) I close my eyes, take a breath, and slice my wrist, taking in the pain that I deserve." I don't think this song is a girl, it's him. He is bullying himself because others are and he believes it. This is a song about cutting, depression, suicide, and self-hate.

Bet that's not what you thought. But that's the kind of band Imagine Dragons is, because some people have crap in their life and not everyone writes songs about love, drugs, murder, and the nasty, unlike all modern singers on the radio (okay, not all modern singers, because: Shindedown, Simple Plan, Fall Out Boy, Avicii, etc. They're still modern, but not enjoyed by the majority because they're unique singers that don't just sing about breakups.).

This song could be about a few things.

    1. This guy is seriously depressed and is in love and she doesn't love him back. He thinks that cutting himself (bleeding out) and whipping himself will help.

    2. (i think this is more likely) he wants to right some wrongs that happened. He may have had someone dump him and he wants to get back together, but regardless of the reason he is willing to sacrifice his well being for the other. He is also willing to be there for her when she is felling bad. He will "be her scarecrow".

I agree with most. I do believe it is a song about depression, hate and self harm. I can see where you lot are coming from when you talk about how it could be about him losing someone he loves and wanting to get back with them or something akin to that but it could mean a bunch of other things as love is not the only trigger to self hate/self harm. It could be about how he failed in doing something resulting in a loss whether it be pride, honor, love, or just someone he knows/cares about but it could also be about how he has bad days too and he should be given the opportunity to be himself and protect himself. He shouldn’t be made to protect others all of the time without anything in return. Protecting others can become tiring and dealing with people without letting yourself heal from everything you can sympathize and empathize for is exhausting and not one person should have to go through that just so others can be happy. At least without that person taking care of themselves too. They need love in return. Love, care, help. That person needs it too. Just because they seem like they can handle being everyone’s “therapist” and “helper” doesn’t mean that the person doesn’t need help from time to time.

I will agree with the self-harm theory. It seems to me not an tragic love song. But more if an tragic self song. As he says " I bare MY skin and cut MY skin" I don't see that as an love song. The scarecrow part I will not say anything on that bit because I can't explain that part. But minus that it seem like an beautifully written song. And well it just doesn't fell like a love song!

I think that it's a metaphor for the despair and thinking that can come with lost love. Once his light is gone, his innocence, his heart is bleeding out, he feels. Yet he still cares for this other person, never wanting to hurt them. So he bares his skin, and counts his sins, closes his eyes and takes it in. It's a REFLECTION of what once was, what the singer has done, the rights becoming wrongs, and what he could have done.

Imagine Dragons has gone through lots of stuff. And this piece is better than Demons or Radioactive. Deal with it. This song shows us that sometimes (Ok, a lot of the times) girls can be pretty mad and angry or cruel and they need to take it out on someone. So why not your boyfriend, the only person who isn't family and you love? And the cover of the album shows him standing on a ledge, staring out into nothingness. This shows that he's completely alone, probably because he didn't become her scarecrow, her punching bag, or her teddy bear. That would've been him, but now it means that despite all the anger and cruelty, he will take anything for her, no matter how loud she yells, how hard she hits, how much she cries. It's beautiful, just the thing to represent Cameron Templesmith from the book The Chronicles of the Youngest Love! :)
