Thrice – Beggars lyrics

All you great men of power,
You who boast of your feats,
Politicians and entrepreneurs:
Can you safeguard your breath in the night while you sleep,
Keep your heart beating steady and sure?
As you lie in your bed,
Does the thought haunt your head,
That your really rather small?
If there's one thing I know in this life,
We are beggars all!

All you champions of science,
And rulers of men:
Can you summon the sun from it's sleep?
And does the earth seek your council on how fast to spin?
Can you shut up the gates of the deep?
And don't you know that all things,
Hang as if by string o'er the darkness,
Poised to fall?
If there's one thing I know in this life,
We are beggars all!

All you big-shots who swagger,
And stride with conceit.
Did you devise how your frame would be formed?
If you'd be raised in a palace,
Or live out on the streets,
Choose the place or the hour you'd be born?
Tell me what can you claim?
Not a thing!
Not your name!
Tell me if you can recall,
Just one thing, not a gift, in this life?
Can you hear what's been said?
Can you see now that everything's graced?
After all,
If there's one thing I know in this life,
We are beggars all!

The analogy about the rich being as likely able to enter the kingdom of heaven as a camel passing through the eye of a needle isn't just about rich people. It's about all. It is impossible. Jesus was saying that it was impossible for anyone to inherit the kingdom of god. Then he says, "but through me all things are possible". Jesus is saying he is the only way to god.

Your ideas are well thought out. But the song is about God, specifically the Christian God. It takes a hard stance on creation, by using earth metaphors. And the line "Can you see now that everything's grace after all" Is a reference to salvation through Jesus Christ, By grace through faith. Christianity is the only religion that teaches that. Every other religion is based off of works to some level. But yes it does show that we all are equals in God's eyes and we are all beggars! Thank God for that and way to go Dustin for putting great theology into music! Not many people are so bold or creativitly intelligent.

This song to me, expresses great humility. The fact that we are Beggars all, suggests that we are all equal in God's eyes (for those who believe in him) and that the boastful big-shots, don't carry any better a place in the Kingdom of God. Ugh, I sound bible thumpery which isn't my intent. But I absolutely love this song. In the bible it states (paraphrasing) that the rich and boastful have the same chance of getting into heaven, than the probability of passing a camel through the eye of a needle.
We all bleed red, and we should be beggars all.
