Sydney Carter – Lord Of The Dance lyrics
I danced in the morning when the world was begun
I danced in the Moon & the Stars & the Sun
I came down from Heaven & I danced on Earth
At Bethlehem I had my birth:

Dance then, wherever you may be
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He!
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be
And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He!
(...lead you all in the Dance, said He!)

I danced for the scribe & the pharisee
But they would not dance & they wouldn't follow me
I danced for fishermen, for James & John
They came with me & the Dance went on:

Dance then, wherever you may be
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He!
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be
And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He!
(...lead you all in the Dance, said He!)

I danced on the Sabbath & I cured the lame
The holy people said it was a shame!
They whipped & they stripped & they hung me high
And they left me there on a cross to die!

Dance then, wherever you may be
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He!
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be
And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He!
(...lead you all in the Dance, said He!)

I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black
It's hard to dance with the devil on your back
They buried my body & they thought I'd gone
But I am the Dance & I still go on!

Dance then, wherever you may be
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He!
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be
And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He!
(...lead you all in the Dance, said He!)

They cut me down and I leapt up high
I am the Life that'll never, never die!
I'll live in you if you'll live in Me -
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He!

Dance then, wherever you may be
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He!
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be
And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said He!

My beautiful mother-in-law passed away last night; her last breath taken as the final note of this hymn played. As I read the words "it's hard to dance with the devil on your back" I think of the horrible pancreatic cancer that has taken her so quickly & too soon from us. She was only 64. However I also now think of her dancing. Wherever she may be. I've always liked this hymn but now it has an alternate meaning for me. It's one she wants played at her funeral so even more fitting that she chose that moment to let go. Rest pain free lovely lady.

This is a song, not about dancing with another. But about dancing with your own life. I have loved this song for the last 60 years, I guess that puts me over 70, but the dance goes on. It's about joy in your own inner lives, long may we have them.

If anyone can hear these lyrics and not understand it is about God's son, Jesus Christ, I don't know what they can understand. Not much, I suspect.

I first heard this hymn when I met a campus pastor for you. C. C. M back in 1986; he sang and played this song at his ordination, so I always think of him when I hear or sing it in church, even though all of us who were a part of this campus ministry back then don't remember one another any longer. This will always help me remember he and his family.

I read the words of the song and it makes my heart sing! I understand that our Lord danced in His heart with the joy he beheld in these beautiful words. I have much joy in my life at this moment having just read these words for the first time and think it is the most beautiful song I have ever heard and the meaning is even more so! Thanks be to God for the person who has the talent to write this and to share it.

God and his son havinf a nice time up in heaven but then suddenly jesus realises he has a passion for dance and hails himself 'lord of the dance' god doesn't like this but lets him carry on and go to ballet school to for fill his dreams. Jesus meets some new friends and is the best dancer there, he has a child with a girl and they live happily ever after untill jesus is transported back in time to become the saviour of the christans and then end up dead.
