Sam Sparrow – Black & Gold lyrics
If the fish swam out of the ocean
And grew legs and they started walking
And the apes climbed down from the trees
And grew tall and they started talking

And the stars fell out of the sky
And my tears rolled into the ocean
Now I'm looking for a reason why
You even set my world into motion

'cause if you're not really here
Then the stars don't even matter
Now I'm filled to the top with fear
But it's all just a bunch of matter
'cause if you're not really here
Then I don't want to be either
I wanna be next to you
Black and gold
Black and gold
Black and gold

I looked up into the grey sky
And see a thousand eyes staring back
And all around these golden beacons
I see nothing but black

I feel a way of something beyond them
I don't see what I can feel
If vision is the only validation
Then most of my life isn't real

'cause if you're not really here
Then the stars don't even matter
Now I'm filled to the top with fear
But it's all just a bunch of matter
'cause if you're not really here
Then I don't want to be either
I wanna be next to you
Black and gold
Black and gold
Black and gold

Basically, this song is about how if what we are incessantly told is true, by reductionistic naturalists like Krauss, Dennett, Dawkins and so on, then there is, ultimately, no point to anything at all. One may as well not bother with anything, and just sleep one's life away in bed.

'If the fish swam out of the ocean
And grew legs and they started walking
And the apes climbed down from the trees
And grew tall and they started talking'

Here he is expressing scepticism about biological evolution, as can be clearly deduced from the very first word that appears in the song - 'If'. Yes, 'if' indeed. How plausible is all of this. Not at all, is what he seems to be saying.

'cause if you're not really here
Then the stars don't even matter
Now I'm filled to the top with fear
But it's all just a bunch of matter
'cause if you're not really here
Then I don't want to be either
I wanna be next to you'

He is basically telling us that if God does not exist, then, being nothing more than a 'bunch of matter', we may as well not even be here to begin with. If life has no ultimate meaning, then nothing we do matters, what we believe doesn't either, ethics is pointless, being good is pointless, and we may as well just give up on ourselves.
