My Chemical Romance – The Kids From Yesterday lyrics
Now this could be the last of all the rides we take
So hold on tight and don't look back
We don't care about the message or the rules they make
I'll find you when the sun goes black

And you only live forever in the lights you make
When we were young we used to say
That you only hear the music when your heart begins to break
Now we are the kids from yesterday

All the cameras watch the accidents and stars you hate
They only care if you can bleed
Does the television make you feel the pills you ate?
Or
every person that you need to be

Cause you only live forever in the lights you make
When we were young we used to say
That you only hear the music when your heart begins to break
Now we are the kids from yesterday

Today, today
We are the kids from yesterday
Today, today

Here we are and we won't stop breathing
Yell it out 'til your heart stops beating

We are the kids from yesterday
Today

Cause you only live forever in the lights you make
When we were young we used to say
That you only hear the music when your heart begins to break
Now we are the kids from yesterday
We are the kids from yesterday
We are the kids from yesterday
We are the kids from yesterday
Today, today

"you only live forever in the lights you make"
You only "live on" if you've made a point across to the world. Once you're dead and everyone who knows you are dead, then no one will know who you were. Unless, you make a point and somehow the world remembers you years after you've died.
"when we were young we used to say"
when they were young, obviously that means when they were young. "that you only hear the music when your heart begins to break"
the first time you truely understand the depth of music and feel like someone understands you out there, that's when you've had heart broken. "now we are the kids from yesterday"
now they are older and they are just of the past.

It makes me cry because I think of all my friends that are now 200 miles away since I moved and this reminds me of all the fun I used to have with them. My chemical romance are truly amazing talented people who can make me laugh cry and get goose bumbs all in the space of 5 minutes. If it wasn't for them, god knows where I would be right now. If I ever met them all I would be able to say is thank you, you saved my life.

I think this song is about living life. Living life and never looking back, because you never know what's going to happen next. This song is for every single killjoy out there, whether you're just an outcast and a reject, or whether you're the person that everyone loves. This is about being whoever you are, no matter what, and being totally fearless about it. That's just what I think- and yeah, I know, I just practically said like three gee quotes. But no one can really explain these things better than him.

This is a brilliant song, and even though it means so much to all us fans, I think mcr really wrote it for themselves: they're saying how much they've matured and grown and changed over the years, but they can still be the same people. Gerard and frank becoming fathers (it's so sweet, I'm proud even though I don't know them personally) had something to do with it, as they are saying they're really not kids any more, but they can still have an impact on kids' lives. They sure saved mine! Great!

Omg, this song is just unbelievably awesome. I agree with the comments about how mcr are the kids from yesterday, 'today'. I dread the thought that there is a meaning in here that there's some sort of finality to their work. Some of the lines in this track are just class - here's a thought - I want a tattoo of one of the lines on my neck and can't make up my mind which one to go for! They're all just so amazing. Anyone help? What would you guys go for? My front runner at the moment is the first two lines, but then I keep changing my mind. Maybe i'll get the whole song done!

This song is basically about not following all the advertisements and brainwashing you're forced into. Be who you want to be, not who you are expected to be. If you don't live like you want, you'll be unhappy. "you only hear the music when your heart begins to break" tells me that you only see how much you could've been and would have been remembered for when you can't go back. Now we are the kids from yesterday.

I see it as a song about looking back on the hardest part of your life and realizing that you've made it through and you're still here and still alive.
We are the kids from yesterday today - I think it means that we are who we were then, or at least to a point, but we've grown, maybe gotten better than who we are, but the point is we're still here regardless. We've made it through whatever depression or problems that hurt us in the past.
The reason I think this is by also looking briefly at the band members lives. If you look at gerards history, he had a really rough time, but now he's married with a kid, and it seems like he's happier. I think he's singing about looking back on who he was and looking at where he is now.

Being a concept album, this song has a meaning in it that you would only understand if you know and understand the rest of the lyrics in the album.
Whoever the song is about, they are reflecting on their past.
Thinking about their childhood, all the good times, all the bad times they've had. "when we were young we used to say"
They're thinking about the present, about the cameras, the news, the accidents. They're living in the static age.
And finally, they're preparing themselves for the future and whatever they endevour. They won't give up their mission, they will do whatever it takes to make it though.
"here we are and we won't stop breathing.
Yell it out til your heart stops beating".
They've made it through the past, they're here, fighting the present, and they're ready to face whatever is ahead of them.
    Killjoys never die.

A song about realizing that you have finally made it past the hard part and that it wasn't so bad as you thought it was. You thought it was the end of the world, it was only the beginning. You look back on all the mistakes you've made and successes gained as a lost and naive child, and how it's shaped you to become this wonderful adult you are now. The pain lasts, but its the good sort.

The song is about growing, making mistakes and taking every opportunity. It's about recognizing that you always have something to lose, and the remorse you may feel afterward helps you to grow into something better. It's about creating something with your life and then living it because we only get one shot at it and for us, this is forever. And lastly, it's about growing up and not being a kid anymore because once you can feel the hurt of losing something and feel regret or remorse, you're not a kid anymore.

I'm not entirely sure what this song means, but I know I love it! :) I do agree with most of what the people before me said (except for, perhaps, the pedofile one) :). It seems like it's saying you only realize the good things when something bad happens ("you only hear the music when your heart begins to break"). I'm not sure, just throwing around some theories. Maybe also that they're still the kids from before, or "yesterday", even now (or "today"). This song really moves me, though. Love mcr. :)

Those of us in our thirties have an entirely different view on this song. Its to remind us who we were when we were younger. To remind us to remain unafraid of what the world throws at you. To always remember. That no matter how many times you're kicked in the teeth. Or torn apart by life. We're the kids from yesterday. And if we can survive childhood. We can survive adulthood.
