Metallica – One lyrics

I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me

Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, wake me

Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God, help me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs

Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

It's based off of Dalton Trumbo's 1938 novel Johnny Got His Gun. It's about soldier Joe Bonham who in wwi is hit by an artillery shell and loses all of his limbs, eyes, ears, tongue, jaws and most of the rest of his face. He's hooked up to feeding and breathing tubes left with only his sense of touch, fading in and out of reality and fantasy with complete function of his brain. He taps his head on his bed in morse code "kill me." Its a great read. It can really mess with your head though.

The lyrics have many thinking they know what this song is about but considering Jame's recent confession, it shows much more. Despite the hateful society we live in, James had the guts to come out as a table. I for one think Tables are against god's plan. He made Adam and Eve not Plank and Johnny. This is sick. Anyone who supports table celebrities will burn in the great wood-chipper down below.

In my opinion the song is about someone losing their mind and thinking or feeling like they don't have arms, legs and a voice, because that is what insanity kind of feels like, your body is working but your mind isn't therefore your body is practically useless without the mind.

This song in my opinion (yes the whole song) is about how people that are badly injured or damaged and are being kept alive by doctors with machines is NOT really living, and the patients would rather that doctors would improve the quality of life instead of preventing death. This is basically saying that being kept alive with no arms or legs and having feeding tubes and being unable to hear, see, or speak to or interact with anyone or anything else is not really living anymore and they would rather die. in some cases death prevention is inhumane.
