Greg Laswell – Comes And Goes (In Waves) lyrics
This one's for the lonely
The one's that seek and find
Only to be let down
Time after time

This one's for the torn down
The experts at the fall
Come on friends get up now
You're not alone at all

And this part was for her
And this part was for her
This part was for her
Does she remember?

It comes and goes in waves
I...

This one's for the faithless
The ones that are surprised
They're only where they are now
Regardless of their fight

This one's for believing
If only for it's sake
Come on friends get up now
Love is to be made

And this part was for her
And this part was for her
This part was for her
Does she remember?

It comes and goes in waves
I...
Am only led to wonder why
It comes in goes in waves
I...
Am only led to wonder why
Why I try

This is for the ones who stand
For the ones who try again
For the ones who need a hand
For the ones that think they can

It comes and goes in waves
I...
Am only led to wonder why
It comes and goes in waves
I...
Am only led to wonder why
Why I try

In my opinion, this song is about depression.
The first four lines are talking about the general feelings you have in depresiion. You are feeling alone, and no matter how much you seek to feel better, and sometimes even think you found a solution, only to be lent down and go back into depression.
The next two lines are talking to those who are so long inside depression, that they're "torn down" and ironiclly called the "experts at the fall" because they're so used to it.
Next the speaker reaches out to those two kinds of depressed people and tells them they're not alone.
"And this part was for her" I think is talking about how this song is trying to reach the part in a depressed person who's buried deep inside by the hoplessness and emptyness of depression. The song is aimes at the hopefull part which has wishes for the future, however this part is so hidden away that you wonder "does she remember?", does she remember that she's still there? That there's hope?
"It comes and goes in waves" is a perfect description of how depression can feel like sometimes. There are good days, but then, like a sudden wave that comes, you're unable to breath and all lights and hope are gone. After suffering from this for awhile, it can suddenly go away and you can have a few good days out of nowhere. And so it repeats, like waves.
The next four lines are refering to those who are so deep in depression they're "faithless". "Surprised" might mean surprise at either people who try to reach out to them (like the speaker), or at the fact they're still alive. Then the speaker says the strongest line "They're only where they are now Regardless of their fight". Depressed people often are thought of as if they has given up and are not trying hard enough, when in reality they're struggling everyday and are fighting so hard without anyone knowing. The speaker recognizes their fight, and the fact that they're still in this faithless position even though they tried so hard.
Now the speaker is talking to all of those with depression, and tells them they should believe. Most depressed people will think "what for? There's no reason to believe" but the speaker says one does not need a specific reason to believe, you need to believe just for its' sake. I think he speaks about believing in oneself, because you don't need a reason to believe in yourself.
Then again the speaker calls out to all of them and tells them to get up and make beautiful things, like love, because they're capeable of creating those.
"I am only led to wonder why I try" even though it comes and goes with no end. This is a very common thought because it feels like no matter how much you try, even if you're able to fight it once, it will come back eventually. It's a war that can't be won.
In the last paragraph the speaker finally reaches out to those who are asking for help and are trying again and again to fight despite all the faithlessness and the lonleiness he described in the song.

But that's just my opinion :).

When we go through tough times, we feel depressed, lonely and helpless. I feel like with Gregs lyrics, he's saying that we're not alone, and that it's normal to feel sad sometimes, it's ok not to be ok. "It comes and goes in waves", good things comes and goes, so does bad things, heartache doesn't last forever, but sometimes you will be sad, that's just life, but Greg is comforting us with the thought that it will pass, when maybe we feel it never will. I must say, I think this is the best song he's written, atleast to me. It's deep and beautiful, just pure genius. I always listen to it when I'm sad and it helps, very relatable.

I think, rather than someone who is going through a heartbreak, is more about someone who searches time and time again for love, only to come up short each time--"the ones who seek and find/only to be let down/time after time". Very relatable. They don't know why it never works out, but they can't get over the idea of love, so they keep going after it, confident they will find it someday.

I think this is about not giving up, about pushing forward even when things are really bad. That's why it begins with "this one's for the torn down, the experts at the fall" and ends with "this is for the ones who stand, for the ones who try again". And the falling ans the standing comes and goes because that's life - but you still try and think you can and you look for better days.

In my opinion, this song is about depression. The feelings of loneliness and disappointment are very strong feelings when you are starting to get into depression. You start to feel hopeless because no matter how much you "seek and find ", something is still wrong inside of you.
After that he speaks about the "torn down", "the experts at the fall ", which can mean those who are suffering from depression for a long time and are ironically called experts because they "know the drill" of depression. However, it doesn't get easier for them either, so the speaker calls out to them and reminds them they are not the only one and that no matter how hard it is, they can get up.
"And this ppart was for her" I think refers to the part inside us that wants to live and be happy, but "can she remember"? Is she still there? If sometimes feel like the depression is eating inside of you all your hope and wishes for the future, therefore it seems sometimes the old you out side of depression is not there.
I feel like the next four lines refer to those who are the deepest into depression, "the faithless", "the ones that are surprised". This could refer to the surprise of either having someone approach them regardless of their state, or the surprise that they are still alive. Those guys are so deep in depression regardless of how much they fought it and how much they struggle with it daily. This line I think is powerful because usually when people look at depressed people they think they aren't trying at all and that they're just giving up. The fact the speaker recognizes the fact that even those who're the most depressed are struggling every day is showing that he understands the other person's feelings because he had also been there, or maybe still there.
The next line calls again for everyone to try and believe and get up so they could fill the world with love. "Only for its sake" refers to the feeling of not believing in any thing because there's no reason to believe, no hope or anything. So the speaker says you need to believe regardless, you don't need a reason to believe in yourself and in getting better.
"it comes and goes in waves" is the most accurate description of how depression can feel like sometimes. There are good days, and then suddenly the waves come out of nowhere and you feel like you can't breath and have no hope whatsoever. And if it's coming and going regardless of my own doing, why am I even trying to fight it? A very common thought in a depressed mind.
And now the speakers try to reach out to all those who try and get out of the depression regardless of those thoughts that it's hopeless.

And that's it, my interpretation :).

To me this song is about a man who gave everything he could to the love of his life, but his harrowing call goes unheeded as she draws him to false conclusions and is unseeing of his feelings. He leads himself in circles and is aware of what is happening " i wonder why, why i try" but can't seem to break his mind from the idea of love "this one's for believing, if only for its sake". This songs ambiance screams of the pain of unrequited love and its toll on the soul. (to first comment: this is also a very possible solution).
