He has the perfect girl who loved him and she prayed all the time that he would be hers. He did not realize how wonderful Mary was at the time and she eventually understood that and let him go. She moved on and found the Man who would be her husband, the Man who knew how lucky he was to have Mary's prayer (love) and the first Man realized Mary's value too late.

Agree with all said. Only thing I can add is reference to "millionaire who shares your wedding day" means to me (rather than high maintenance) that despite a millionaire who "could" choose to be with anyone he wants, he would be considered by the author as the luckiest guy to have (found or been found by) Mary.

I agree--think a user found a nurturer/giver. Someone to mother him. She thought he was the one she had been praying for and he was everything in her eyes. He probably cheated on her and she had enough (been propping him up to family and friends--mary you can hold me up there) and her eyes were opened. Reference the fruit from the tree--once adam and eve ate from the fruit their eyes were open. Was he the snake that ruined paradise?
The verse where the heavens rolled and the rain washed away the mary that he knew--reminds me of the flood where god wanted to start over,.
References to water is a cleansing, becoming a new person. Jesus put water on a blind man's eyes and he could see.
The verse about blessed is the millionaire--the one that marrys her and has her in his life is rich.
I like this song because a woman that is being taken advantage of and being walked on finally has enough and moves on to find someone who really cares about her.
He realizes what he had and is remorseful and does his pentenence (saying 10 hail mary's).
I'm not catholic--so I have probably missed alot in the references. I do know they pray to the madonna to act as an intermediary and I think that is what the chorus is saying.
Great song--my favorite from the 80's

This song is the most beautiful reminder of a lost love. The song is about an old girlfriend "mary". He obviously made a mess up of this past relationship and regrets it deeply. The line about blessed is the millionaire, to me seems she might have been high maintenance. Also about the fruit on the tree might mean something similar. Leave a light on in heaven, does this mean he hopes to meet her there? Sounds morbid! But it does emphasise how deeply this has effected him, perhaps he met her again I doubt it, but it is one of my favourite songs.

Beautiful song that's very heartwarming and emotionally touching, however I feel that there was an unintentional gaffe in one of the lyrics which was no doubt overlooked by songwriter Gary Clark when he wrote this masterpiece. In the verse discussing the tree, the line of "Mary you can blow me up there" has obvious sexual connotations which I don't care to repeat in my comment. I would suggest changing that line to "Mary you can HELP me up there" instead. Again, a terrific song though which should have been a lot more popular than it turned out to be.

I have a different interpretation. I sense that the singer was the driver and he and Mary were in an awful traffic accident. She survived but suffered a head injuries that took away her personality. "the Mary that I knew" As a result he is haunted by guilt and does not expect redemption in this lifespan "maybe leave the light on in heaven".
