dodie – She lyrics
[Verse 1]
Am I allowed to look at her like that?
Could it be wrong, when she's just so nice to look at?

[Chorus]
She smells like lemongrass and sleep
She tastes like apple juice and peach
You would find her in a Polaroid picture
And she means everything to me
Oh

[Verse 2]
I'd never tell
No, I'd never say a word

And oh, it aches
But it feels oddly good to hurt

[Chorus]
She smells like lemongrass and sleep
She tastes like apple juice and peach
You would find her in a Polaroid picture
And she means everything to me

[Bridge]
Oh
(Oh, oh)
Oh
Oh
(Oh, oh)
Oh
And I'll be okay
Admiring from afar
'Cause even when she's next to me
We could not be more far apart

'Cause she tastes like birthday cake and storytime and fall
But to her
I taste of nothing at all

[Chorus]
'Cause she smells like lemongrass and sleep
She tastes like apple juice and peach
You would find her in a Polaroid picture
And she means everything to me
Yes, she means everything to me
She means everything to me

I’ve been secretly in love with my straight best friend for years and this song speaks to me in a way no other song has. Especially the line “but to her, I taste of nothing at all” because no matter how much she cares for me, or how close we are, she’ll never be able to love me in the same way. Also the tone of the song, longing and loving but not bitter, is exactly how I feel. It hurts sometimes, but I’m so grateful to have her in my life, and for the relationship that we already have that “I’ll be ok admiring from afar”. And lastly, “I’d never tell, No, I’d never say a word” because I love her too much to burden her with a love she can’t return. I’ll break my own heart every day just to see her happy because “oh, it aches, but it feels oddly good to hurt”.

I think it's about a girl who falls in love with another girl, and this song is about her admiring that girl, and it literally says, "Admiring from afar.", but the other girl isn't in love with the singer, so, as I said earlier, the singer is admiring from afar.

This song is definitely about a girl who likes another girl but that girl will never feel the same way. The girl knows her crush will never feel the same. Unfortunately i relate and many others can too, this song just expresses it in such a way that’s so relatable. Sigh.

I think this song is about a girl who has a crush on another girl who will never share the same feelings. She was always admiring from afar, never had the courage to tell her crush how she felt. I relate to this song so hard in unbelievable, I have a crush on my Bi best friend. When it says "And I'll be okay
Admiring from afar" that's the part that makes me cry, I know that my friend's heart belongs to someone else and I'll never be with her. It hurts knowing that she'll never return the feelings, and I'm afraid to tell her, if I do then she might reject me, idk young love sucks some times. I hope others can relate, falling in with your best friend is hard, especially if you're also Bi. p.s: both me and my best friend are girls.

I believe this song is about exploring ones sexuality (in this case wlw) and accepting as well as having feelings for a girl who Is unable to reciprocate them. "is ir ok to look at her like that? I know its wrong..." is an example of the artist exploring her feelings towards girls, and possibly feeling guilty for a "sin" (put in quotes bc screw you homophobes). "but to her, I taste of nothing at all" shows that the girl obviously isn't interested, or that she enjoys..... male company...

This song reminds me of how I'm pan sexual and have a crush on my best friend, who's a girl. It's definitely about lesbian love, but one of the things that this song has is making you realize your true colors. A lot of people can relate to this. One girl likes another, yet the other girl doesn't like her back. 'but to her, i taste of nothing at all' is the proof. I bet you this is the lesbian song of the future. It a song that expresses who we are, and we know it straight away. Kids {Like me} who have listened to this straight away know who they are. This helped me realize who I am. If I could talk to dodie, I'd thank her for this song. It's really important we know who we are. Dodie will be the voice of our time. Soft, sweet, calm, meaningful and relaxing. It spurts your true colors. It says words you relate to. It revels who you are. This song has a meaningful meaning, a soft push on your life path, and a push on your heart to make you realize who you are! Thank you dodie for this song..P.s some might relate to the 'she doesn't love me back' sentence. I do to. But that's ok :)

it's a wlw story, most likely about a girl crushing on a girl who can't/doesnt like u back! It's not about a guy, don't erase the few lesbian love songs we have :(((( I don't know how anyone could view this a mother daughter thing...it's pretty clear that its romantic

I think you all have it wrong. This song to me sounds like a young woman who must’ve given up her daughter for adoption. She says you can find her in a Polaroid picture. She talks about birthday cake and story time. She talks about how she can only admire her from a far and how she means everything to her but she will mean nothing to the little girl. Listen to it again with this perspective.

I have liked a lot of straight girls in the past, and that has slowly torn me apart. They will never like me the same, becasue I am different and not straight. The line, "and I'll be ok admiring from afar" I realte to also becuase as I mentioned I like a girl but she won't like me back. I drove myslef off the wall trying to not show my feelings but whenever she texted I smiled. Whenever I saw her notifaction I laughed. When she said something funny like her fav ice cream flaovr is Zuchini Bread (I didn't even know that was a flavor) but she doesn't like me back and never will. Also the line, "And she tastes like storytime and birthday cake and fall but to her I taste of nothign at all" I love that line the most because that is the line that probaly represents me the most. I feel bad for making her mad and I don't like that were not even speaking, not even as friends. Anyways thanks for taking the time to hear me rant about my crush. Have a good day people

This song is so relatable and makes me feel so sad and bitter. I know that when my female friends smile at me it's not the same way I smile at them. I think this song is about her feelings for another girl who doesn't return those feelings. And when she says "Am I allowed to look at her like that" she might be pondering if feelings for the same gender is wrong (which it isn't).

The song truly symbolizes what a girl feels when she falls in love with her best friend. Having fallen for my best friend of so many years and hoping I could someday just kiss her, but in reality, she's just a straight girl who wants nothing to do with you. This song is just beautiful!! and so deep. All praise to Dodie for making this wonderful masterpiece, which summarizes all I want to say in a song.

The fact that I can't relate to this song is honestly astronomical. I used to be in love with my straight best friend, however, I knew they were most indefinitely not going to feel the same. "She means everything to me" it's true, she did mean everything to me. However, "I taste nothing at all" was something that spoke out to me. I knew I meant nothing to her, and that hurt a lot, but like Dodie said, "but it feels oddly good to hurt" because I was still close to her, however in the end I ended up telling her, and she became very distant, which ended everything, but at the moment, everything was great until it wasn't. She was the one who made me realize I'm not the straightest :) and in a way, I'm thankful for that. However, it hurts to see her with a guy who's a duche, when I could've given her so much more than what he was. Maybe that's mean, but he wasn't anything I would imagine her with, but neither was I. Yea, that's my explanation ig lol.

The all too relatable fear of your own love for someone else.
The constant lingering anxiety that when you finally leave your fear behind and honestly say how much you love them they won’t return or understand your feelings.
No matter how brief or long-lived this phase is, every relationship has this moment.

What if this song is about the narrator revisiting childhood memories and missing their mom who now has dementia.
Apple juice, smelling like sleep, birthday cake, are all childhood tates/smells (and smell is so closely associated with memory). "You could find here in a Polaroid picture" is both a literal indication of the narrator's mom being in a old Polaroid and metaphorically, you can "find" the real her in this picture, back when she was fully present.
Mom's dementia would definitely cause the narrator to feel physically close but far apart, and poetically explain "to her, I smell like nothing at all' - she doesn't remember her own child.
No matter how you interpret it, this song is heartbreakingly beautiful.

I believe this song is about a Daughter and absent Mother(Death/Divorce). The only things she has of her mother are a Polaroid picture and memories. Memories of her while she was a child; of Apple Juice, Storytime, and Birthdays. She holds her mother close(picture) yet she is so far away(physically). It is beautiful song.

i think this song is about a girl who has a crush on her guy bestfriend. but her guy best friend has a crush on the girl whom this song is about. the singer (girl who has a crush on the guy) is telling the story through her point of view as the guy tells it to her. at the end it sound like it says she and then trails off and says he means everything to me. this implies that the singer likes the guy.
