They're abusing him and such, or they're trying to control their life and they just want to get out. The other way is how most perceive it. As a relationship gone sour and the "house" is not "home" anymore.

He's saying this building, this house, is no longer home for him. "I'm better off alone" probably means he's better off living without her.
