I have my mother's dreams
I have my father's eyes
You can't take that from me
Just go ahead and try
The crescent city sleeps
While giants in the sky
Preparing to unleash
Let loose a mighty cry

Can nobody save us?
Will anyone try?
The pyre is burning
The cypresses has said
And all along they're saying

Help is on the way
(They said, they said)
Help is on the way
(They said, they said)
One by land - two by sea
Right there in front of me
Help is on the way

Five thousand feet below
As black smoke engulfs the sky
The ocean floor explodes
Eleven mothers cry

My bones all resonate
A burning lullaby
You can't take that from me
Just go ahead and try

She stands at the shoreline
With hands in the air
Her words pierce the dark night
Does anyone care
And all alone they say it

Help is on the way
(They said, they said)
Help is on the way
(They said, they said)
One by land - two by sea
Right there in front of me
Help is on the way

Right here! Right here! [x3]

Choking on the black gold
Upon which we rely
We keep actions in the attics
To see cameras in the sky

Help is on the way
(They said, they said)
Help is on the way
(They said, they said)

We were told just to sit tight
'Cause somebody will soon arrive
Help is on the way
But it never came!
It never came!

Help is on the way
(They said, they said)
Help is on the way
(They said, they said)
One by land - two by sea
Right there in front of me
Help is on the way
On the way

"help is on the way!!! "... Or so the government says.
I think this is about aid to international or foreign (even domestic) problems. The help is promised, but it never comes. The promises to send help end up being empty promises and people are left to suffer alone.

This isn't supposed to be a rant on the government, but that's just the way i see it. It tells of the true issues the government has about making empty promises to people and not following through.

The song is about both katrina and the bp deepwater horizon disaster. The line "axes in the attic" refers to how many new orleans residents were forced to take refuge from the flood waters in their attics, and how in many cases survival depended on whether or not they were able to cut their way through the attic ceiling and onto the roof when the waters overtook the attic.

"cameras in the sky" refers to how people were left stranded on their rooftops and the only choppers in sight were news choppers completely devoid of any rescue capabilities.

"one by land, two by sea" seems, to me, to refer to the fact that new orleans had two disasters: one which wreaked havoc on land (the levee breaches of katrina); one which wreaked havoc on the wetlands and the gulf (deepwater horizon); and the fact that both originated from the sea.

The title of the song refers to the sluggish and inept response of municipal, state, federal, and (in the case of deepwater horizon) corporate authorities in the aftermath of both disasters.

It's talking about Katrina & the oil spill in the gulf. A couple of the lyrics are not correct: "The pyre is burning" should be "The BAYOU is burning"; "The cypress has said" should be "The cypress has DIED"; "We keep actions in the attics" should be "We keep AXES in the attics".

It is talking about the oil spill in Louisiana. He makes references like "the ocean floor explodes" and "choking on black gold"
