House Of Cards lyrics

Songwriters: Greenwood, Colin Charles; Greenwood, Jonathan Richa; O'brien, Edward John; Selway, Philip James; Yorke, Thomas Edward

I don't want to be your friend
I just want to be your lover
No matter how it ends
No matter how it starts

Forget about your house of cards
And I'll deal mine
Forget about your house of cards
And I'll deal mine

Fall off the table,
Get swept under
Denial, denial

The infrastructure will collapse
Voltage spikes
Throw your keys in the bowl

Kiss your husband goodnight

Forget about your house of cards
And I'll deal mine
Forget about your house of cards
And I'll deal mine

Fall off the table,
And get swept under

Denial, denial
Denial, denial
Your ears should be burning
Denial, denial
Your ears should be burning
Denial, denial

love this song! plus amazing video!
its is so well written. i think it can be interpreted in two ways:

one being about two people in an extramarital affair who are caught their respective loveless marriages and a mundane suburban existence and the singer urges his lover to forget about her 'house of cards' which is meaningless and he will do the same.

on the other hand it can also be about a swingers club where people throw their keys in a bowl and randomly choose their partners for the night. hence, the singer doesn't want to be her 'friend' but just her 'lover' and tells her to kiss her husband goodnight for the night. it could be seen as highlighting the commitment less, instant gratification relationships we seek today.

either way...love the song! :)

I think this song has two underlying meanings
First:
Love. He is interested in pursuing a relationship with someone and there are many things preventing them from being together. The term "House of Cards" could be all the insecurities and worries that come with commitment. "Forget about your house of cards" is just basically saying forget all your worries, i'm here to take care of you and you don't need to keep building yourself up only to bring yourself down. In a nutshell: Surrender to yourself let your walls come down and take a chance.

Second:
Just life in general...live life don't deny yourself anything because you don't think your good enough for it. Don't let your "house of cards" which consists of your problems and vulnerabilities hold you back
