I believe this song is about the boy and girl falling in love and as their relationship grows and develops they realize that they may not be perfect together as they had originally thought. The boy is looking back and wishing for the good times they had, he is wondering where they went wrong in this relationship and why it isn't as fun and as easy as it was in the beginning and in the end they finally accept that they gave it their best shot and it was hard realizing this but they have to let it go.

I think what the song means is that, these two people belonged together but there was no way for them to live in peace. And they grew up and decided to finally try it, and the fought for their love and it lasted a while, but eventually they forgot what the were fighting for. Now all they have of it are the memories of their love, and they want to hold on to those with all they have.
