Panic! At The Disco – Mercenary lyrics

Just a dime store poet
Keeping pace, talking his face blue
Two dollar store tramps
To get a glance, a new chance at you

Walk past the dance floor,
That’s always been a dear friend of mine
Cut coils and concubines,
Dancing in four-four time

“Hey mister” the bell man says,
“I can only recall and spend some time I said”
So he replies, “and how do you manage?”
I dodge the blast and apologize for collateral damage

In love I’ve always been a mercenary,
But I never leave my post when the cash runs out
I wanna make you quiver,
Make your backbone shiver
Hey kid- take the stage and deliver

“Hey mister” the bell man says,
“I can only recall and spend some time I said”
So he replies, “And how do you manage?”
I dodge the blast and apologize for collateral damage
Collateral damage
Collateral damage
Collateral damage
Collateral...

“How does it feel to stand on the very stones
That ran with your parent’s blood?
Do you feel sad?
Full of rage?
Or does that outfit help bury your feelings?
Hiding your true self
You’re a truly extraordinary specimen; I look forward to breaking you”

I dodge the blast and apologize for collateral damage

“Hey mister” the bell man says,
“I can only recall and spend some time I said.”
So he replies, “And how do you manage?”
I dodge the blast and apologize for collateral damage

“Hey mister” the bell man says,
“I can only recall and spend some time I said.”
So he replies, “And how do you manage?”
I dodge the blast and apologize for collateral damage

A part of Arkham city game is batman sitting at his parents death spot (it's an Easter egg) and Hugo Strange has left a tape there you can listen to. The speaking in this song that you hear is that tape taken from the game. This song is from Hugo's point of view and it is aimed at batman. Hope this helps anyone wondering about it. I would recommend playing it and it will help understand the song! Or looking up Hugo strange and bat and relationship. This song is awesome though. Especially when you know what it's about! Means a lot more and fits perfectly with the game! Kudos Panic, a masterpiece once again.

Arkham city + p! Tad = epic! Love the game, love panic! At the disco, great combo. As for the meaning. It doesn't really have one. But it has hugo strange in the middle, talking to batman, saying, "how does it feel to stand on the very stones that ran with your parent's blood? Do you feel sad? Full of rage? Or does that outfit help bury your feelings? Hiding your true self. You're truly an extraordinary specimen, i look forward to breaking you. "

The song means that he, being a mercenary (someone who fights not for loyalty but for money) has lost his friends (the dancefloor), parents, and his boss doesn't have money to pay him. But, he is loyal and doesn't care. Because everyone knows that he is like this a doorman ask him "how does he manage? " meaning how does he live with himself. So he replies, "i dodge a blast and apologize for collateral damage. " maening I dodge emotions the blast of my emotions and just apologize for the damage that I have caused because of my ways.

In response to the unregistered comment about the lyrics, i'll quote -
("its not " only recall and spend some time I said, " all the lyrics sights have it wrong, it's " only recall last nights hotel I said"which to be honest makes far more sense in the general theme of the song. It doesn't even sound remotely like "spend some time")
The official lyrics video (made by fuelledbyramen, the band's record company) quotes the lyrics as "spend some time i said. " so the lyrics on this website are not wrong, the diction of the artist is a little fuzzy, that's all. That is not a snide remark, as I love panic at the disco, they're one of my favourite bands. I just mean to point out that the lyrics on this site are accurate.
