Bag of bones and blood red cheeks
Guilty from the words I speak
Say the truth will set you free
But it won't for me
Cause I'm uneasy in my skin
Hangin on by a thread
Life it hasn't left me yet
But I won't forget
The devil's been talkin

The ship is setting off to sea
But it's sailing without me
I can't help but feel I'm on
An island born to sink
The devil's been talkin

We can't change who we are
We are all alone

I'm running out
Of this hole alone
These fingers bled
Down to the bone
And I can't move
This hell is cold
The chorus sings
This is home
The devil's been talkin

Bag of bones and blood red cheeks
Guilty from the words I speak
Say the truth will set you free
But it won't for me
The devil's been talkin

I believe that this whole song is reminding us that god doesn't give us the spirit of defeat. So every time there is a verse explaining these lyrics of defeat, it is pointed out very soon after that the devil is the one talking.

Sometimes people start to pray to god that they feel defeated and run down but god's word will only remind you that he's not the one that gives you those feelings. In other words, "realize that the devil's the one who is talking. "

I love the reference in the beginning because to me it challenges the cross. "bag of bones and blood red cheeks. Guilty from the words i speak" [jesus was put on the cross and deemed guilty of our sin]. "say the truth will set you free" [the truth of god's promise through jesus on the cross is what has set us free]... And then the lyrics goes on to say-"but it won't for me, ... The devil's been talking. " that is the devil's purpose to try and take away the power in the cross. But he'll never succeed. He'll always be just "talk. "

That's how i see the song. Super real and full of truth.

To me, this song speaks of the world and us. The devil is trying to persuade us into believing that we can do nothing about who we are and what we've become... N that leaves us with nothing to the meaning of life. But ultimately this song is trying to bring to light that savior who can save us despite what had happened in our life is the answer to every of our problems, and there is this best place only love can go, where there is our heavenly father. But this is just how i see it but the song's composer will definitely have something to say about it because i know this song has got a deeper meaning. So, we'd love to hear from needtobreathe!

About a person who is completely stuck where he is at. The devil likes him that way, this way he can't move while the devil continues to work him over.

The devil makes us think we have no access to the power to create change and to move forward. The devil gets us to focus on our inadequacies instead of our qualifications.

Well... For me, this crisis that's happened, it feel like the devil asked how far he could take my family down. After a year and a half i now have the strength to say, "if the devil's been talking in your life... It is now time to say shut up. Jesus is in control and reigns on the throne. "
