NEEDTOBREATHE – White Fences lyrics
My heart is numb
The feeling that I get from
The way you shake your voice
And curse this bitter love
And oh, it's cold
Living in a fallen home
We were just kids back then
Too scared to be alone

You leave me in the dark
Recounting all my sins
You put words in my mouth
But who is gonna mend
These white fences

Oh, it's cold
Living in a fallen home
We were just kids back then
Too scared to be alone
Oh, I said oh, the fight
My legs are unsteadied by
The way you close your eyes
I wish we could hit rewind

You leave me in the dark
Recounting all my sins
You put words in my mouth
But who is gonna mend
These white fences

My heart is numb
The feeling that I get from
The way you shake your voice
And curse this bitter love
And, oh, the fight
My legs are unsteadied by
The way you close your eyes
I wish we could hit rewind

You leave me in the dark
Recounting all my sins
You put words in my mouth
But who is gonna mend
These white fences

I personally think he's talking about him and his wife fighting when he says my heart is numb the feeling that I get from the way you shake your voice and curse this bitter love. Then when he says, oh it's cold living in a falling home, he's reflecting on when he was a child and he witnessed his own parents fighting. Then during the chorus when he says you leave me in the dark, recounting all my sins he is saying, you ignore out problems/refuse to talk about them, you make me out as the bad guy, and since we can't talk about it, who is gonna fix it (mend these white fences).

Many things enter in to break apart families as we grow up together. To me this song is about forgiveness - i.e the repair of the white fences (or offenses). The only thing between us should be the enduring and unshakable love of God. That is what the kids afraid to be alone and the parents who would leave them alone desperately need. See 1Cor 13.

It's about looking back into the past. They were young, making choices in which they would not have known any better at the time. Looking back, they have regret and wish they could take some things back. But now that they are older, they realize the mistakes made. Blame was made on each other when they say you put words in my mouth. And who is going to mend these white fences? The white fences represent a friendship, a bond or a hope in a relationship.

I think it is more about growing up in a dysfunctional home as a kid--maybe abused, maybe neglected. Shutting him up in his room to "think about all the bad he's done" even though it is more about the bad of the parents. I see the reference to white fences as having the outward appearance of the perfect house, the perfect home, but it's not and those fences which are really broken down need mending.

"it's cold living in a fallen home. "
I love the song - but that's a sad and negative description there. It's a sad song. Definitely a struggling marriage.
"fallen" is often a christian description, referring to being kicked out of eden - that's the fall. We live in a fallen world - with all of the immorality depicted as "normal" in popular culture, etc. Sounds like this song is a sad comment on so many broken marriages in society today.
