Omg i never realized this was a bout heroin till i read this, but it all makes sense now. Its someone who controls you without a hope of you being free, you know that you can end it, but at the same time you cant. Just like this:

Was james a heroin addict?

To all of you saying metallica didn't get into drugs, you're right... With the exception of james.

The song has been interpreted by a lot of you in very interesting ways, but it's really about a crack addict. The "master" featured between the solos is either a hallucination, drug dealer, or the drug itself. The first solo is probably the point where the addict reaches rock bottom.

I think it talks about the dominance of heroin because of the phrase "needle work the way" anyone wants to debate that feel free,afterall this a democracy right and by the way metallica is my favorite band

Nothing againt musiclover but it is about drug abuse i can see how u got confused with thinking its about "god" see i could see it too but most metallica fans knows like me n my hubby and we are athiest and i hate that alot of christians wanna flip shit like this song for instense you listened hard look at the lyrics but did no background check or anything or even u woulda felt like a tard after finding out that it was about drugs and frankly i might add if it was bout "god" this song would speak trueth

The song is about drugs and the album cover represents political leaders putting our people in unmarked unimportant graves because were expendable, i dont think its a religion thing.

Musiclover655 you're taking this too close to heart, personally i like to leave out the politics and the meanings of things and just go on listening to stuff if i like it. But this song is about drug use, and you know drug use pulls you in and its hard to escape its grasp (the members of metallica have been in and out of rehab, its simple). It feels good to do drugs at first, makes you feel free, but its an illusion because your body builds up a resistence to it, and you start using more to get the original feeling you had, then you crave it more and more and soon its the only thing in life that matters. Drug use also shortens your life span, killing you faster. See my point? Its about the struggles of drug use and how you are its puppet and how it rules you

I saw this song's meaning as (and wish i hadn't) as referring to god / jesus as being the master of puppets... And saying that he only promised lies and he isn't giving anyone their dreams, as in the verse: where's the dreams i've been after? And also: just call my name cause i'll hear you scream... And the album cover where it shows the hands at the top, you'd figure they were supposed to be god's hands or something... I love this song, but when i figured this, it bothered me alot. I am a christian.
