Imagine Dragons – Shots lyrics

[Intro]
I'm sorry for everything
Oh, everything I've done

[Verse 1]
Am I out of touch? Am I out of my place?
When I keep sayin' that I'm lookin' for an empty space
Oh I'm wishin' you're here, but I'm wishin' you're gone

I can't have you and I'm only gonna do you wrong
Oh, I'm gonna mess this up, oh, this is just my luck
Over and over and over again

[Chorus]
I'm sorry for everything, no, everything I've done
From the second that I was born it seems I had a loaded gun
And then I shot, shot, shot a hole through everything I loved
Oh I shot, shot, shot a hole through every single thing that I loved

[Verse 2]
Am I out of luck? Am I waiting to break?
When I keep sayin' that I'm lookin' for a way to escape
Oh I'm wishin' I had what I'm takin' for granted

I can't have you and I'm only gonna do you wrong
Oh, I'm gonna mess this up, oh, this is just my luck
Over and over and over again

[Chorus]
I'm sorry for everything, no, everything I've done
From the second that I was born it seems I had a loaded gun
And then I shot, shot, shot a hole through everything I loved
Oh I shot, shot, shot a hole through every single thing that I loved

[Bridge]
In the mean time, we let it go
At the road sign we used to know
We can let this drift away
Oh we let this drift away
At the bay side, we used to shore
In the moonlight, we let it go
We can let this drift away
Oh we let this drift away
Cause you've always got to change your mind
Cause you've always got to change your mind
Oh love, can you hear me?
Oh let it drift away

Oh love, can you hear me
?
Oh let it drift away

I thinks this song is about him feeling as if he has hurt the people the people he loved, feeling like he messed everything up. He feels bad now, and wants to apologize for everything that he did. He thinks that he is done and he has no luck. He thinks he is out of his place and needs to escape. He loves someone, but only thinks he will do he will do her wrong. This is an amazing song in my opinion.

I think this song is about a friendship or relationship he feels he was responsible for breaking down and he is accepting responsibility and apologising for it to try and take things back to how they were even though in his heart he knows that can never happen. But he can't help but feel regret as he keeps reliving it 'over and over and over again' in his head.

I think the lyrics are religious in nature, and Christian in origin.

First he says, "I'm sorry for everything", acknowledging that he's made mistakes. He asks, "Am I out of touch? Am I out of place?" because in this world you're not supposed to be sorry for being born the way you are. But he is sorry, because he's taking responsibility for his own actions.

Next he says, "I'm going to mess this up... Over and over and over again.", acknowledging that he's powerless to be the person he wants to be.

Then he says, "From the second that I was born it seems I had a loaded gun, And then I shot, shot, shot a hole through everything I loved". Here he's acknowledging that his sins have caused harm to his own personal self interests, and they really haven't benefited himself either.

Then he says, "In the mean time, we let it go". It's an interesting choice of words. I wonder if he was aware that the original word in the bible in the ancient (Koine) Greek for "forgive" was actually heard by the speakers of the day as "let go", or "let it go". It seems he's invoking a sense of forgiveness, letting go of what he can't make fully right in the meantime.

Next he says, "Cause you've always got to change your mind". Changing your mind is another interesting phrase. At the heart of what it means to "repent" is the notion that you're being asked to think differently, and in effect, change your mind. To say you've got to change your mind is to say you need to repent from what you've done.

And lastly he asks, "Oh love, can you hear me? Oh let it drift away". He's asking if you're truly hearing what he's saying, and he's calling you to let it go, (perhaps to forgive), to let it drift away.

I don't know if this is all of what he intended this to mean, but if it is at all, it's an excellent piece of work.

I think the lyrics are "From the second day I was born". To me the meaning is that he feels he has screwed most things up since he was born. That he has created some problems for himself but also been at the mercy of circumstances he could not control.
