Imagine Dragons – Polaroid lyrics

[Verse 1]
I'm a reckless mistake
I'm a cold night's intake
I'm a one night too long
I'm a come on too strong

[Chorus 1]
All my life, I've been living in the fast lane
Can't slow down, I'm a rolling freight train
One more time, gotta start all over
Can't slow down, I'm a lone red rover

[Verse 2]
I'm a hold my cards close
I'm a wreck what I love most
I'm a first class letdown
I'm a "shut up, sit down"

[Pre-Chorus]
I am a headcase
I am the color of boom
That's never arriving, and
You are the pay raise
Always a touch out of view
And I am the color of boom

[Chorus 1]
All my life, I've been living in the fast lane
Can't slow down, I'm a rolling freight train
One more time, gotta start all over
Can't slow down, I'm a lone red rover

[Chorus 2]
How did it come to this?
Love is a Polaroid
Better in a picture
Never could fill the void

[Verse 3]
I'm a midnight talker
I'm an alley walker
I'm a day late two-face
I'm a burn out quick pace

[Pre-Chorus]

[Chorus 1]
All my life, I've been living in the fast lane
Can't slow down, I'm a rolling freight train
One more time, gotta start all over
Can't slow down, I'm a lone red rover

[Chorus 2]
How did it come to this?
Love is a Polaroid
Better in a picture
Never could fill the void

[Bridge]
I'm gonna get ready
For the rain to pour heavy
Let it fall, fall
Let it fall upon my head

[Chorus 1]
All my life, I've been living in the fast lane
Can't slow down, I'm a rolling freight train
One more time, gotta start all over
Can't slow down, I'm a lone red rover

[Chorus 2]
How did it come to this?
Love is a Polaroid
Better in a picture
Never could fill the void

The author of the song is writing about a relationship that went south. He's "the color of boom" and she's "always on tune". All the things in the chorus are the faults she found with the author/that he found with himself/why he could never quite measure up. Love is "better in a Polaroid" because when you look back at it, it seems perfect and you can gloss over the things/times that didn't go well. However, a picture/memory doesn't fill the void and is not a substitute for a real relationship.

My friend loves Imagine Dragons so as you can tell she plays the CD this song is on. One day she said it's about love being better if you don't love anyone at all. It sounds confusing but you have to look at the lyrics to understand.
"Love is a Polaroid. Better in pictures." This may mean that love is too hard for this person so he compares real life's love to ones in movies or pictures. In movies love is always perfect and nothing goes wrong and they can depend on each other and so on. "All my life I've been living in the fast lane." He believes that his life is too fast and girls just come and go in the blink of an eye. He believes he is too "fast" for love.

This song relates to the struggles of loving someone. "Love is a polaroid" is like saying love is good on paper or good in theory, but is a struggle in reality. This song is not saying love is bad it's just saying it's hard as sometimes things don't measure up.

To me this song describes two people who are in love. Person A "the color of boom" and person B "the opera always on time and in tune" If person A were a painting they would be some odd emotional abstract thing, splattered on a large canvas. If person B was a painting they'd be the mother fucking Mona Lisa. Person A is someone who feels like a destructive force. They live kind of fast paced..without much thought. They live for the moment but also feel a lot of guilt and disappointment with themselves and their behavior..which probably causes them to act more recklessly. I think when he refers to person B, "the pay raise always a touch out of view." He's describing someone he loves. Who tends to be a bit more planned out and "perfect". Perfection is probably what this person strives for but there's always a step up..always something more they want. They are never good enough for themselves but they work on it constantly. Love is not what you'd hoped it would be. It doesn't make you feel like less of a failure. It doesn't make you feel less hollow. It always looks better from the outside... in pictures, movies, etc. it can't fix you're faults.

I think it means that love is better in picture than it being fake. The person wants to capture every moment with his partner.
That's why it mentions it about love being a Polaroid.
But here is the catch,: he thinks he is not good enough for his partner. That's why he says all this stuff about letting himself down.
