I think it is about 2 people who used to be friends then later became enemies.
But they could have a little sympathy for each other:

When love dies, in the end' love here doesn't really mean relationship, it means love as friends has ended; hatred has started

He is describing how much of a manipulative bastard his friend was just to use him like this and smirk while watching him suffer

Although the person really hates him but again, he's either showing a little bit of sympathy for his enemy and also hatred telling him to say goodbye to the past where they spent good times and tells him he'll not back off.
'i'll be gone

He describes part of despise saying to his enemy if something happens to him he will not help him and will just watch him suffer
'don't carry me under
You're the devil in disguise
God sing for the hopeless'
He describes the enemy's decesive personality and prays to god to help people realize the kind of friends they have

He might be saying that his enemy left him alone as a friend whenever he needed him badly

Its what your feeling deep in yourself and you don't want to let it out

I see it as someone who is speaking about his/her self. The relationship with yourself is not good one. About to have a nervous breakdown. A person can find what lies beneath themselves. Let their own person know that they are always going to be together. A reminder that you cannot quit on something that is suppose to be an absolutely sure thing... Your life... No matter how cruel life can be you must always be there beside it and live. ..

This is a song about the end of a relationship... More specifically, the storyteller (ben(or anybody really) doing something wrong to her during there relationship... Maybe was just being a jerk to her. He didnt realize how bad it hurt her until she left him, and afterwards she is very mean to him. 'now you turn the tide on me, cuz your so unkind'. Now she is being nasty to him, possibly trying to get back at him, or maybe not even trying to. He still loves her 'i will always be here for the rest of my life'. He's trying to apologize, he wants her back, he wants to be forgiven, but she is terible to him. He loves her with all his heart, but she seems to hate him... And he is trying to find what lies beneath this sick, twisted behavior she is doing to him... He wants her back, the old her. He is trying to find her again. 'so i'll find what lies beneathm your sick twisted smile, as i lay underneath your cold jaded eyes, now you turn the tide on me, cuz your so unkind, i will always be here, for the rest of my life'
This is an amazingly well written, emotional and tragic story... I love this song. It keeps me motivated in a very similar problem i am facing in my own life.
