C'est une chanson
Qui nous resemble
To tu m'aimais
Et je t'aimais
C'est une chanson. .. .- this is a song which we resemble, so the singer starts to show that though they love each other life has other ideas about what it will have for them - their love is not to be! Like footprints on the sand the sea of life will come along and wipe them away - as if they have never been - Sans faire de bruit - without making a noise. He sings of the sadness that life sometimes brings - the sadness of the leaves falling in the Autumn reflecting his mood.

Que c'est triste Venise
The singer is saying that "Venice is so sad", the question is somewhat rhetorical in that he answers in the next line "Au temps des amours mortes" " At the time when love dies" The singer continues "Quand. .. " "When we no longer love each other" he goes on to say that with love dead there is only ennui - boredom! The theme continues as he describes the beauty of Venice that while still there is no longer meaningful. Like all of his torch songs Aznavour shows the depths that the pain of lost love or lack of love can have on a person.

Somos novios
Pues los dos sentimos mutuo amor profundo
Y con eso ya ganamos lo más grande
De este mundo

Nos amamos, nos besamos
Como novios
Nos deseamos y hasta a veces
Sin motivo, sin razón
Nos enojamos
We boyfriends
For both feel mutual profound love
And with that we won the greatest
In this world

We love, we kiss
as boyfriends
We wish you and sometimes
No reason, no reason
We get angry
