"The word became flesh"
As stated in John 1:14 (NIV),
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."
The word is the prophecies made true by the coming of Jesus Christ who was sent by The Father Himself.
The flesh is the ascending of Christ from Heaven to Earth in human form.

"Rid me of myself" is a plea of the artist for him to be cleansed by God. He wanted to help because the world overcame him and he wanted to be redeemed.
"I belong to You" is a strong request of the artist that he wanted to be claimed by God. He submitted his whole life to Him and is asking to be protected and kept holy by The Lord.
"Oh Lead me, lead me to the cross" shows that the artist is somewhere lost and wants to be found again. He wanted to change or somewhat go back to his pure ways. He was turning to God asking for Him to enter his life.
