The Kane Gang – Motortown lyrics
The paintworks gleaming
In the rising sun
All our hopes are rising high
Now the battles won
Brothers and sisters gather around
To change some luck
Just can't lose
When the dice go down

Everybodys glory bound
Bowing down in motortown
Spread the news all around
They've got it made in motortown

There's a new age dawning
For a friend of mine
It's a revolution
In the latest style
Nothing left but a desperate trust
Kiss that chrome
Make a wish
Before it turns to rust

Everybodys glory bound
Got it made in motortown
Spread the news all around
Come on down to motortown

The cars roll by
The old steelyard
As the weeds grow high
It's a miracle, a miracle, a miracle...

Business is booming
In a come good zone
The cash may have gone
But there's hope on loan

Everybodys glory bound
Got it made in motortown
Forget what's lost and cheer what's found
Build cheap cars in motortown

Everybodys glory bound
Got it made in motortown
Spread the news all around
They work for pennies in motortown

Although parallels can be drawn with this song's contents and Detroit, USA, it is actually about the English City of Sunderland Tyne and Wear. At one point they were a bastion of heavy industry and were even the world's largest ship building town. Then Prime Minister Margret Thatcher deemed the heavy industry in the North of England to be unprofitable, and the North of the country, especially Sunderland, saw their prosperity disappear almost overnight.

All heavy industry in the area was replaced by a single car manufacturer, Nissan, who opened their factory in 1986, the year this song was released.

The Kane Gang, who are from Tyne and Wear, wrote this song as a cynical protest of the factory and the decimation of the ship building industry.

This song is about Detroit in the late 1980s. People had a lot of hopes and dreams that the car industry and the city would make a comeback. As we now know, almost 30 years later, that didn't happen. A lot was lost when the Big Three took their business elsewhere.
