Story – In The Gloaming lyrics
In the gloaming, oh my darling
When the lights are soft and low
And the quiet shadows, falling,
Softly come and softly go
When the trees are sobbing faintly
With a gentle unknown woe
Will you think of me and love me,
As you did once, long ago
In the gloaming, oh my darling
Think not bitterly of me
Though I passed away in silence
Left you lonely, set you free
For my heart was tossed with longing
What had been could never be
It was best to leave you thus, dear,
Best for you, and best for me
In the gloaming, oh my darling
When the lights are soft and low
Will you think of me, and love me
As you did once long ago

This song is about yearning in the twilight - that most romantic time. It is about hoping that someone that you still think about is still thinking about you. It is the regret of an older person - maybe the speaker saw problems that had no easy solution - was one of the lovers already married? Whatever, the speaker took what was seen as the high road and released the other person. All that is left is the longing and regret and the hope that the memory of the other person also regrets and longs for the speaker. It is as if the speaker wants to catch and this time keep the lover in the net of memory. It reminds me of that Yeats poem "When you are old and sitting by the fire take down this book etc." Memory is a kind of balm - a bitter-sweet mixture of time's erosions and hope's unfailing solace.

It's a song from the late 19th century. It speaks of love lost and the longing years later for that love. I sang this as a duet with my grandmother in the 50's and 60's. She was longing after my grandfather who killed himself when they were young. In the 70's it became my turn when my husband killed himself when we were young. My grandmother's song had become my song.

Someone I love was taken from me out of pure jeolousy. His love was pure and it filled an emptiness that touches my soul even today.
Set free by someone else to die or just disappear.
Many hours, tears, and looking serving others best I could along the way as someone was caring for him I sought to ease my acheing but never my longing for what we had but can never have agin. Though saden by my carless actions that brought this deed about, he blames not me and still loves me as deeply as of then. But fate as led him to new life paths wher he now loves and heals others as he once did for me. Not a day passes that I do not think on him and send loving positive thoughts.
When alone especially at twilight my tears still fall recalling the love that I have lost. But at twilight if he thinks of me and still loves me then this must be enough for me for he is better oof set free from fear that was and is still lingering here. Best to leave him thus but in the twililght, gloaming, he thinks not bittlerly of me but it eases my souls pain
to think of him remembering me in the gloaming and loving me as he did once five years ago.
