Stevie Ray Vaughan – Life By The Drop lyrics
Hello there
My old friend
Not so long ago
It was 'til the end

We played
outside
In the pouring rain
On our way up the road
We started over again

You're livin' a dream
As though you're on top
My mind is achin'
And Lord it won't stop

That's how it's happened
Livin' life by the drop

Up and down that road
In our worn out shoes
Talkin' 'bout good thangs
And singin' the blues

You went your way
And I stayed behind
We both knew
It was just a matter of time

Livin' a dream
As though
you're on top
My mind is achin'
And Lord it won't stop

That's how it happens
Livin' life by the drop

No waste of time
We're alive today
Turnin' up the past
There's no easier way

Time's been between us
A means to an end
God it's good to be here
Walkin' together my friend

Livin' our dream...
My mind stopped achin'...

That's how it happened
Livin' life by the drop

That's how it happened
Livin' life by the drop

That's how it happened
Livin' life by the drop...

In an interview with the co-writer of the song, I believe in Texas Monthly from the early 90's, she said that the song was about two old friends who wanted the best for each other. One ended up paying bars and opening acts while the other filled stadiums. They both had drug and alcohol problems, but that is not the basis of "Life by the Drop." It's what they used to say to each other, wresting each moment of life a drop at a time. That idea may have come from drinking, but not the meaning, according to her.

Song was written by Doyle Bramhall for SRV. I'm not sure it's as deep as people imagine. Once he gets clean, he does however look back with regret on the part of his life that he spent in an alcohol drug induced hazed. It's over and done. And now they just look ahead taking it a day at the time. Bramhall also struggled with addiction. It's basically a song of sadness from the past. In the end he will roll with life as it unfolds, and look back on with happiness and his sobriety.
