If you've ever loved someone more than they loved you then you'll understand the meaning of this song. It's about trying hard to make things work but the person you're in love with has put up a barrier you can't break through. Sometimes people are incapable of letting go of past loves and relationships, or maybe more time needs to pass before a person emotionally ready for a new relationship. That's what's going on in this song: A man loves a woman who is emotionally distant, trapped in a past love that she refuses to let go of. The man is madly in love but he's getting nothing back emotionally, and it's tearing him apart. He's conflicted, waiting for her to let go of her past love and fully embrace the good thing they have. It's become all too painful and he's struggling with the reality that she may never change, never open up to him. He's conflicted but if things don't change, he know that for his own happiness he needs to move on and let go of her and the relationship. If she wont' let go of her past, then he needs to let go of his love for her. Perhaps his next lover will be wondering why he won't commit, why he won't let go. And, so goes the circle of unrequited love.
