Shinedown – Through The Ghost lyrics
Speak of the devil look who just walked into the room
The guilted and faded notion of someone I once knew
All the perfect moments are wrong
All the precious pieces are gone
Everything that mattered is just
A city of dust
Covering both of us

{chorus}
Did you hide yourself away
I can't see you any more
Did you eclipse another day
I used to wake up to the colour of your soul
Did you hide your self away
Are you living through the ghost
Did you finally find a place above the shadows
Of a world we'll never know
The world will never know you like I do

So many silent sorrows you'll never hear from again
And now that you lost tomorrow, is yesterday still a friend?
All the bridges that we built will burn
Not a single lesson was learned
Everything that mattered is just
A city of dust
Covering both of us

{chorus}
Did you hide yourself away
I can't see you any more
Did you eclipse another day
I used to wake up to the colour of your soul
Did you hide your self away
Are you living through the ghost
Did you finally find a place above the shadows
So the world will never know
The world will never know you like I do

Like I still do

Did you hide your self away
I can't see you any more
Did you eclipse another day
I used to wake up to the colour of your soul
Did you hide your self away
Are you living through the ghost
Did you finally find a place above the shadows
Of a world we'll never know
The world will never know you

In my opinion it relates mostly to addicts.
'guilted & faded', addicts often feel a sense of guilt for their habits and can become faded both physically and mentally.
'perfect moments are wrong' because 'all the precious peices are gone', an addict can be present physically, but not really be there in a mental state, the part of a person that matters (the precious pieces) are not present for an addict even in the most perfect of moments. Their either of in their own world or thiking when they can get another fix.
'everything that mattered' as in everything that mattered about that person (the addict) doesn't anymore, it's gone, destroyed by the addiction simply 'a city of dust', this affects both the addict and friends/family - 'covering both of us'.
The whole chorus and name of the song captures perfectly the feelings of isolation experienced when on drugs. Addicts hide away in their own little world, not really feeling or touching the 'normal world' that 'normal people' experience. Addicts are literally 'living through the ghost', 'hiding away', eclipsing another day by being in their own little worlds, never letting the 'world know them'.
'lost tomorrow' because the drugs have a hold of an addicts future; the past and when an addict could actually feel joy is still 'yesterdays friend'.
It's just my opinion and ofcourse I could be wrong, but it's what living through the ghost means to me.

It's the song of a relationship lost. If you've ever experienced betrayal by a close friend/lover this song will really hit your heart. I've cried buckets of tears to this song because my best friend and lover betrayed me. Not because she meant to, but because she was coerced and strong armed into it by people who didn't have her best interest at heart. I knew her so well, and no one else does. "did you hide yourself away? " did you decieve your own heart.

As a 9/11 survivor I feel the loss of a time before that tragic day and how so many still live 'through the ghost' of that day. Some of the lyrics, remind me so much of the many that survived and perished on that tragic day and how -the world will never know [you]"
-now that you lost tomorrow, is yesterday still a friend? "
-everything that matter is just a city of dust covering both of us". -did you finally find a place above the shadows of a world we'll never know"

It's about looking at the person in the mirror, and not recognizing them anymore. And having to understand that sometimes you have to go through hell and you have to fall into a hole in order to find out how to come back out of it. It's really about self awareness and understanding that you can't be strong all the time, and that you see yourself going through obstacles. And each obstacle for some reason keeps constantly putting you back into that hole. And really it's a song that opens up the idea that you have to figure out how to climb out of this hole, you have to understand that everything that is good has a little bad. And everything bad has a little bit of good. Life is like a yin-yang, it has to be formulated through balance. You have to understand that you are not going to be perfect. You have to be focused and you have to be clear, and sometimes you have to step back, and take a deep breath, and count to 10, and reset, and then go forward.

I definitely think that it's about someone who used to be close to him. And I think that whatever that person is going through, it didn't work out for them. So now they're "back" and he wants to know if there's a chance of getting back to how it used to be because it was probably a real special time for them("and now that you lost tomorrow, is yesterday still a friend? " is the line I draw that meaning from). And for whatever reason, he realizes quite quickly after seeing this person again that there is no chance of getting back what they once had--but it's not because one of them changed--it was because both of them had.

My meaning for through the ghost is special to me. I think the lyrics are talking about someone who has made a major change. There is someone special in my life and he changed, as did I. I screwed our friendship up with one message. I regret it and this song makes me think of him. I love him but I can do nothing but listen to this song over ad over again.

This is jesus who is sad that satan would not stop until he had to be destroyed. Of course "speak of the devil" is just a saying but it sets up the song. The city of dust is jerusalem that was destroyed by the romans in 70 A. D. "are you living through the ghost" means that satan no longer has access to the father (god) or the son (jesus) so the only way of life left for him is the holy ghost. After jesus' resurrection at the cross, satan no longer can win and so he has to hide what he really is from the world. But jesus has known him since creation and used to see him until god banished satan from heaven forever. He says "did you hide yourself away... I can't see you anymore. "
