Rodgers And Hammerstein – You've Got To Be Carefully Taught lyrics

Cable:
You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught

I have long admired Rodgers and Hammerstein for their convictions, standing up to the bigots and haters among us, who would make less of "others" to make more of themselves. They only told the TRUTH when they wrote the music and lyrics to "You've got to be Carefully taught". Even today, 66 years after that first performance, the music and lyrics of the song ring true, and should remind that there is still lots of work to do to bring equality to ALL Americans. And indeed, to many people world wide. Inequality maks all of us poorer, not richer.
