Paul Kelly – Dumb Things lyrics
Welcome, strangers, to the show
I'm the one who should be lying low
Saw the knives out, turned my back
Heard the train coming, stayed out on the track
In the middle, in the middle, in the middle of a dream
I lost my shirt, I pawned my rings
I've done all the dumb things
Caught the fever, heard the tune
Thought I loved her, hung my heart on the moon
Started howling, made no sense
Thought my friends would rush to my defence
In the middle, in the middle, in the middle of a dream
I lost my shirt, I pawned my rings
I've done all the dumb things
And I get all your good advice
It doesn't stop me from going through these things twice
I see the knives out, I turn my back
I hear the train coming, I stay right on that track
In the middle, in the middle, in the middle of a dream
I lost my shirt, I pawned my rings
I've done all the dumb things
I melted wax to fix my wings
I've done all the dumb things
I threw my hat into the ring
I've done all the dumb things
I thought that I just had to sing
I've done all the dumb things

This has nothing to do with the lyrics and what I think about them but whateves.
Born on 13 January 1955 in Adelaide, Australia. Kelly travelled around Australia before settling in Melbourne in 1976. He became involved in the pub rock scene and recorded two albums with Paul Kelly and The Dots. After splitting he formed 'Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls' in 1985, they formed in Sydney, Australia and they released 15 songs and 5 albums. Although during that time he renamed them to Paul Kelly and The Messengers to avoid racist interpretation. At the end of the 1980s Kelly returned to Melbourne and in 1991 he ended Paul Kelly and The Messengers. One of his highest successes was “How to Make Gravy’, which was released in 1996. It was nominated for song of the year at the arias and the apra music awards and in 1997 ‘How to Make Gravy’ won an award for Best Male Artist.

I'm too broke and polite to offend Paul Kelly because he is a great bloke and an awesome Australian I was at the Townsville International Motel in the piano bar at the sugar shaker when he wrote this song in 1986. I was too intoxicated to get into the night clubs so Saturday nights I would go in there because they sold beer. The song is about a small town drunk falling asleep on the train track in Wycheproof Victoria where the train track is in the middle of the Main Street. The quote I’ve dune all the dumb things was a quote overheard from me. I caught the fever was me complaining about my Ross River fever from mosquitoes a common soldier problem. Started howling is about my Melbourne girlfriend getting pregnant to Steve at the Belgrave football club.I made up porning the frenship ring because she kept it The coloured girls were the 3 islander girls I sang with behind the piano . He wrote down lyrics I vomited out more of a poor me boo hoo tail about why I enlisted. The backstabbing was about my football mates not careing and coming to my defence or helping get my impounded Torana out of the impound tow truck yard in Oakley. He add the melted wax to fix my wings because it rhymed. I complain to Paul about my repeated drunk mistakes, the dumb things proud to have drunk sung with Paul all the best Kieran d
