This song is specific about the "burning bridges" - decisions involving leaving friends and feeling lonely. I think we all "burn bridges" in our lives, but not necessarily the ones mentioned in the song. In kelly's heroes, the bridges burnt are both real bridges and career bridges. However, in contrast to the song, they did not "leave their friends standing there" - so the song is more of a contrast than a description of what happened.

I was very young when I saw the movie, but loved the tune so much that I felt It lent a lot to the good vibes you get from watching a good movie. I always just looked at it at face value. That we ignore people, and opportunities when we younger and busy chasing our own whims. We look back later with feeling of regret at losing friends, Family and windows of opportunity. I think most folks have these regretful feeling later in life.
