Mayday Parade – Terrible Things lyrics
By the time I was your age I'd give anything
To fall in love truly was all I could think,
That's when I met your mother,
The girl of my dreams,
The most beautiful woman that I'd ever seen.
She said "Boy, can I tell you a wonderful thing?
I can't help but notice you staring at me,
I know I shouldn't say this, but I really believe,
I can tell by your eyes that you're in love with me. "

Now son, I'm only telling you this because
Life can do terrible things
.

Now most of the time we'd have too much to drink
And we'd laugh at the stars and share everything.
Too young to notice and too dumb to care,
Love was a story that couldn't compare.
I said "Girl, can I tell you a wonderful thing?
I made you a present with paper and string,
Open with care now, I'm asking you please,
You know that I love you,
Will you marry me? "

Now son I'm only telling you this because
Life can do terrible things.
You'll learn one day, and I hope and I pray
That God shows you differently.

She said "Boy, can I tell you a terrible thing?
It seems that I'm sick and I've only got weeks.
Please don't be sad now, I really believe,
You were the greatest thing that ever happened to me. "

Slow, so slow, I fell to the ground on my knees.

So don't fall in love there's just too much to lose.
If you're given the choice,
I'm begging you choose to walk away, walk away,
Don't let it get you.
I can't bare to see the same happen to you.

Now son, I'm only telling you this,
Because life can do terrible things.

You don't have to tell everything that happened in like 20 years chronologically in detailed to tell a good story. The timeline is fine. Like in the lyrics, first line "by the time I was your age I'd give everything to fall in love", obviously, the son they have is already mature enough to get in to a relationship and the father is telling a story from the past So it didn't really say anywhere in the song when the mother died, but she died long ago and a lot of things before and after in between those timelines, many things happened; they fell-in love, got drunk etc, married, had a son then terrible thing happened. logically, the lyrics is good

This is one of the most meaningful songs I've ever heard, and believe me when I say, I listen to a lot of meaningful stuff. Basically, this song is written about a man, falling in love with a woman, and about how they were the most in love two people could be. They ended up having a child together, and that's who the father was speaking to, in the song. So, after they had their child, his wife got sick (with cancer, I'm assuming, but hey... what do I know?). He was devastated, as a normal human being would be. He was frustrated with the world, because he believed that he, nor his wife, nor his child deserved this, and honestly, no one deserves cancer. :( Eventually, the mans wife died of an illness, leaving him to be a widowed man (I think that's the term, but IDK), with his child. So, he warns his son what life can bring you. He explained the story of his and his wife's love story, and their tragic end. :( Cancer is a big deal, and it sucks when someone you know deals with it, and loses the battle.

To me, this song is about a father telling his son why love can be dangerous, telling him that when you get to attached to something, it can be hard letting it go. So he's telling his son not to fall in love because there's to much to lose if it goes south (like his wife getting sick and passing away).

Now, I'm not saying it's impossible, but the timeline of the song is odd.
    Fall in love.
    Proposes.
    Weeks to live.
So, apparently between falls in love and proposal there's a child born, because this is a father telling his son about his mother.
And in the short implied timeline they could have had a kid, they were constantly drunk. So yeah. I'm confused.
Musically and emotionally, this song is awesome. But logistically I don't get it.
