Lesley Gore – Love Me By Name lyrics
I tried so hard, to be carefree
Rolling out of someone's bed into the sunshine
But the sun coming up
Doesn't always bring the light
And somehow I feel
It's just not right, not for me

Chorus:
It's been so long
Since I've been loved by name
Love me by name
Love me by name
Come on, come on, come on, come on

I feel afraid, I don't know why
You're surely not the first I've had
Who held me gently
Who took the sweet time to ask me about me
Well maybe this time, oh, God, let it be

Repeat Chorus
×

This song was written at the height of the Women's Liberation, 1970s. Double standards for men and women are still alive. Men can roll in and out of bed with partners whereas, women are held do a different standard. She thought she was carefree to try and do it but she really isn't feeling it. What she wants is a loving relationship! A man that will call her by name and be tender and be into "her". Now this man has held tenderly, asked her how she is doing more than any other man she had sex with. She prays to God that he is the one. It's not easy for some people to hop in and out of bed for a short good time. She wants a relationship, a man that will love her and call her by name. Hope that explains it.
