We dated off and on for 12 years, I let him live with me in my house for 3 years, not helping with the mortgage or anything else. He ran the streets, drank too much, flirted too much, and was unfaithful, but for some reason, I loved him. Came to realize that I loved him more than I loved myself. He did finally buy me a ring. A 1. 5 carat emerald cut platinum but he met someone else, she and I fought (not over him but because of lies he told her). They had known each other for 9 months and got married. I always knew what he was about but I allowed myself to get caught up. I came to realize that it is true that god does not take away without giving up something better and he did! I'm married to an awesome man, we have a beautiful son, a beautiful home, and a god centered life. I did, in the midst of our breakup, thank him for all of the bs he put me through, thanked god that he spared me from contracting aids or any other disease from him and going through that has made me more in love with my husband, child, and myself! Estelle's song struck a nerve in me when I first heard it because I realized that I haven't forgotten the pain he put me through, nor do I want to. I embrace it, and I "thank" him for contributing to making my marriage sweet, my self-confidence stronger, and my life beautiful! I do know that he has asked about me (we have mutual friends still). He and my husband know each other and he was livid once he found out we were dating because he knew the door would not be opened this time. His wife and I are in the same sorority (we didn't know each other before this). I've known him most of my life and know how he is/what he's about. Maybe she could change him so I hope she's happy. The meaning I got from the song thank you, was a woman who fell in love with a man at a young age, and over the years he caused her a lot of hurt, pain and heartache. But from all of that hurt she flourished and grew into a beautiful intelligent woman. The woman that god intended for her to be (she finally knew her worth as a woman). She had enough of the lies and broken heart, her door was now closed to this man and she was finally moving on. But before she completely cut him off she wanted to say thank you and express to him that from all of his bs he helped her to become the strong independent woman she is today. Yeah it hurt but she because he was her everything, but she had to love him enough to let him go.

I think song means that even though you took me through the mistrust, cheating, lies, games that in the end he helped her to grow up and know that she deserves better and even though she has crying nights and the pain is as strong as it was in the beginning that she is okay! She on her grown folks ish now thanks to his petty a$$. So my life!
