I see it as someone who is speaking about his/her self. The relationship with yourself is not good one. About to have a nervous breakdown. A person can find what lies beneath themselves. Let their own person know that they are always going to be together. A reminder that you cannot quit on something that is suppose to be an absolutely sure thing. Your life. No matter how cruel life can be you must always be there beside it and live. .

My perception of this song is the torture endured that cannot be bluntly spoken of. I feel that it is little hidden messages about how the industry really works. I think he is speaking of someone who causes him pain in a very dismaying manner, and has no resentment of the fact. In the beginning lyrics I think he is speaking to us (the listeners) almost as advice "start a fight... you won't win". The fact thats it's inevitable, once you're in... that's it, you're in. "I will always be here for the rest of my life" and this part is sang so sadly in some verses and very angrily in others. He knows, theres no way out now. However that is just my opinion, and I am meager, meek. I will say I have the utmost respect for Benjamin and the rest of the band. I admire and love them and yet pity as well. So call me crazy, but remember... that's very submissive.

This is a song about the end of a relationship. More specifically, the storyteller (ben(or anybody really) doing something wrong to her during there relationship. Maybe was just being a jerk to her. He didn't realize how bad it hurt her until she left him, and afterwards she is very mean to him. 'now you turn the tide on me, cuz your so unkind'. Now she is being nasty to him, possibly trying to get back at him, or maybe not even trying to. He still loves her 'i will always be here for the rest of my life'. He's trying to apologize, he wants her back, he wants to be forgiven, but she is terible to him. He loves her with all his heart, but she seems to hate him. And he is trying to find what lies beneath this sick, twisted behavior she is doing to him. He wants her back, the old her. He is trying to find her again. 'so i'll find what lies beneathm your sick twisted smile, as I lay underneath your cold jaded eyes, now you turn the tide on me, cuz your so unkind, I will always be here, for the rest of my life\'.
This is an amazingly well written, emotional and tragic story. I love this song. It keeps me motivated in a very similar problem I am facing in my own life.
