Big Country – In A Big Country lyrics
I've never seen you look like this without a reason,
Another promise fallen through, another season passes by you.
I never took the smile away from anybody's face,
And that's a desperate way to look for someone who is still a child
.

Chorus:
And in a big country, dreams stay with you,
Like a lover's voice, fires the mountainside..
Stay alive..

(I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered
But you can't stay here with every single hope you had shattered)

I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert,
But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime..

Chorus [x2]

So take that look out of here, it doesn't fit you.
Because it's happened doesn't mean you've been discarded.
Pull up your head off the floor, come up screaming.
Cry out for everything you ever might have wanted.
I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered
But you can't stay here with every single hope you had shattered.

I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert,
But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime..

Chorus [x3]

Well I don't know what it means to the writer or what the song itself is about but to me it has hit home in my heart since I first heard it till now. And that is one of acceptance and hope. If you have to come up screaming to accept what has been done and cry out for what you want and that just cuz bad things have happened doesn't mean I've been discarded. I am all that I am and have a place in this universe and the universe wants and loves me, don't fear and fight for truth and defend your pain; there will always be hope even when it feels shattered.

The song was written during a period of feeling great pain for the riter's god-daughter. Her mother, who had been the writer's girlfriend for several years, was now becoming involved with--and eventually married--a monster. She was too close to see clearly. The writer anticipated what was in store for the little girl, who had become quite attached to him and had no other friends. The writer decided to turn down very attractive and scarce job offers back east, so he could stay in her life, rather than betray her, as first her father and then her mother had done already in this child's life. The early line in the song are reflections on this. The girl's mother came from korea, where she was a very big frog in that small pond. She was destined for greatness on the highest level. But when she came to the you. S. For graduate school, her self-esteem fell dramatically. She sometimes mused on how coming to a "big country" lowered her status, which mattered a lot more back in small-pond korea. Her anguish, caused in part by this sociological phenomenon, is a theme throughout the song, and the songwriter reflects on how country size (such a distal influence) indirectly caused anguish, including her daighter's and his own in feeling her pain and altering his life plans to protect her.

I love this song and only came across it about a year ago. Since then can't stop listening to it! Love it. So intense. Info I came across the singer stuart adamson killed himself - on 16 december 2001 he was found dead on the floor of a closet in his room at the best western plaza hotel in honolulu, hawaii after committing suicide by hanging. At the time of death he had a blood-alcohol content of 0. 279%.
