The song explains the mindset of a singer who trusted but was eventually hurt by past relationships - "There's pain that I've learned a lot from". Now that they are in a new relationship they have trouble trusting their feelings and are worried that they will be hurt once again. Trying hard to not "jump ahead of (themselves)" and wanting to "drive slow" or taking the relationship slow. Absolutely beautiful song can really relate.
