Khalid – Alive lyrics
[Verse 1]
Unread texts and missed calls
Told everyone I turned my phone off
Didn't ask for help and now I’m lost
Life comes in phases
Consequences and mistakes
I'm sorry that it's taken me so long

[Pre-Chorus]
Mister, mister, please let off your power
Give me half an hour, or better yet, a few
Only sweet until it all goes sour
But life is what you make it, and then there’s more to lose

[Chorus]
Gatekeeper, can you show me more to life?
Lately, I've been living out of spite
Grim reaper, just give me one more night
I need another chance to say goodbye
I shouldn't have to die to feel alive

[Verse 2]
Here's the thing with disappearing
You can yell and no one hears you
Times like this, I need a ear
When I finally have so much to say
Wish I could see your face, oh
And do what I have to stop the tears

[Pre-Chorus]
Sister, sister, please know that I'm sorry
I wish you could've stopped me from falling off the hill
Only sweet until it all goes sour
Life is what you make it until it gets too real

[Chorus]
Gatekeeper, can you show me more to life?
Lately, I've been living out of spite
Grim reaper, just give me one more night
I need another chance to say goodbye
I shouldn't have to die to feel alive

This song is definitely about dying, and I don’t want to be grim, but the perspective it’s written from makes it seem like it’s almost about suicide. The perspective comes from a person who feels lost, and feels as though he/she has just been “living out of spite.” Later in the song, the lyrics read, “I wish you could have stopped me / from falling off the hill.” So it basically sounds like this person is trying to end his/her life. These lyrics reflect his/her last thoughts before he/she passes away. The song also goes on to say, “I shouldn’t have to die to feel alive,” so this perspective comes from someone who is choosing to die, but at the same time, has regrets about doing so. The lyrics note, “I need another chance to say goodbye” and plead, “Grim Reaper, just give me one more night.” To sum it up, refer to the part that reads, “Here's the thing with disappearing / You can yell and no-one hears ya / Times like this I need an ear / When I finally have so much to say / Wish I could see your face / And do what I had to stop the tears.”

Simply put, this song is definitely about dying/suicide. Khalid, himself, may not be experiencing these feelings, but may know someone that could be going through this. The biggest part of this song that tells me it is about dying and/or suicide is that he mentions, "I wish you could have stopped me from falling off the hill." This proves that this person has regrets about killing them self but it would be too late for anybody to know because they would already be dead. The song also repeats, "Grim Reaper, just give me one more night. I need another chance to say goodbye." This shows that the person has died and has regretted dying because they are asking the grim reaper, or death, for another chance to say goodbye to their loved ones. Another line that goes deep into one's heart is "I shouldn't have to die to feel alive." This is showing that they don't feel "alive" when they are living. This could lead to suicidal thoughts from thinking they would feel alive once they are dead. Even though this song may sound nice and sweet with his soft voice, it definitely has a more in depth meaning that could be relatable to many people.

The moment I heard this song I could literally see my baby brother. He took his life about 4 years ago. The lyrics were hitting me in a place I had not allowed my heart to feel yet and if this song is not about suicide. I am literally going to need the writers themselves to explain what the hell it is about. I don’t often bother to think too much meaning into songs because there are so many different things each one can be related to. But I I do not think that even someone who has no feelings (sociopathic) could listen to this song and not hear the pain in the words this song has in every note. Unfortunately I knew long before he died how much he wanted to and I could do nothing and I tried. But when someone is in the pain (agony) these incredible people that many times have already reached out but are either ignored by those they are grasping for the hurt and judgement is too much for them and by that time someone like myself cannot get to them in time. I beg to all of you. SUICIDE IS NOT SELFISH THESE INDIVIDUALS DO NOT SEE AN OUT. please help. Please don’t turn a blind eye. I promise it will come back tenfold. That’s not a threat it’s me having watched 2 “friends” of his that the guilt is eating at their own souls now have to live with not knowing if picking up one of his calls. Recognize the pain and attempt to help. My ♥️ Is with all who are lost or have lost

I feel the song depicts that you have to loose something precious to gain what you want.
Basically life is what you make it, sweet untill it get sour!. He indirectly talks about selling his soul. You wishing he never did and wished he was stopped before making that decision.
Shouldn't have to die to feel alive. Shouldn't have to sell your soul to feel give life a meaning.

I think it's about depression and not so much suicide, of course it mentions death, when talks about grim reaper and shouldn't have to die to feel alive.but "falling off the hill" doesn't necesarily mean dying.. to me it refers to falling into deep depression, "I wish it could've stopped me", if falling of the hill meant dying, then the lyrics wouldnt make sense. Of course it talks about second thoughts about suicide and regrets in life, but that part means going into deppression. I think we should hold on, if you want to suicide hlde because every second you hold on is a second someone else has to be able to reach you. You can yell but no one hears ya, means you want somebody to help but not everyone can unerstand that you're going through difficult thoughts about living.
